Zhivago - OJM + KURT ROSENWINKEL

Published 2011-12-19
Kurt Rosenwinkel Partners With Portugal's Orquestra Jazz de Matosinhos for Our Secret World, Releasing on September 7, 2010

An ambitious Big-Band Reworking of Seven Rosenwinkel Compositions. Kurt Rosenwinkel has always given us music that has conveyed a sense of masterful storytelling & breathtaking imaginative reach. His significance to the ever-evolving jazz tradition in fact transcends the oft-cited lineage of jazz guitar in much the same way that Thelonious Monk and Wayne Shorter both impacted colleagues much beyond the scope of their respective instruments. For what has perhaps distinguished Kurt more than anything is his one-of-a-kind compositional voice — full of mystery and power, marked by an effortless marriage of high complexity and simple, undeniable emotional appeal. These qualities, hallmarks of Kurt's output from the beginning, are apparent perhaps as never before on a new big band release,

I am ashamed to say I have never heard of Kurt Rosenwinkle until I read that Eric Clapton said the guy was a guitar genius. So here I am to listen for myself .... Eric Clapton is not wrong, Kurt has another fan, absolutely brilliant jazz guitar.

There are not enough comments on here on the sound mix. It's spectacular. Stereo at its finest.
  • Kurt's nodding is head during his own solo thinking "Shit yeah I'm the fuckin best"
  • @dclarkmusic
These jazz players are SO CLEAN. No fret buzz or anything even while shredding
  • Aside from Kurt, this song would not be as awesome as it is without the superior drumming. I don't know who that guy is but he's swinging hard as f*** on this record. He keeps the energy going at a high level on this tune.

Kurt's playing is so melodic and the way he creates the solo and adds more tension into it little by little is astounding. He's a true master.

Steps forward in the jazz language. I've listened to all from kurt's music I can. It's about not only guitar virtuosity but composition, music itself.

This gets to prove that jazz is still strong and vibrant genre

the melody and 12/8 pattern is what draws the distinct Metheny correlation....Kurt is a badass regardless....oh, and the vocal unison too. Go Kurt !
  • @Eradicateify
The energy in this and the structure of the tune is just amazing. Kurt is really a fantastic composer and a guitarist. The melody is so strong it even sticks without the harmonies/punches/countermelody/pads.

I love this piece! Kurt is so lyrical and one of those cats that has truly found his own voice...
