Ben Spies is an AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame’r that had an incredible road racing career both in the US and in Europe. Ben rose to fame racing in the glory years of the AMA Superbike Championship and his battles with Aussie Matt Mladin are legendary. The GFC in 2008 force Ben to look for opportunities to race overseas and in 2009 he made the move to the WSBK Championship and then onto MotoGP. Ben is one of the nicest guys you can hope to ever meet and I loved getting the chance to talk his career and life.

Colin Edwards (Texas Tornado) also said you could set up a superbike perfectly but with a MotoGP bike there was always something that you could never get quite right.

Had the worst breaks in motogp…his swingarm literally broke at Laguna Seca! But damn he dominated SBK….and the fact that you gotta win twice in a weekend is even crazier!
  • @SosopChabot
F**k ya, Ben Spies! This guy left America, went to World Superbike raced on Tires (Perrelli) bike brand (Yamaha) AND TRACKS he DID NOT KNOW and still won the championship on the first try. Plus, he’s the only guy to beat Matt Mladin when he was dominating AMA, this guy is a true badass…

You're a great interviewer, but please let the guest speak without interrupting them. It is uncomfortable to watch. Thanks for not losing your temper Ben.
  • @js290
last American racer to show up on the international scene not confused... and brutally honest about his own skillz & sensitivity on the top level machines
  • @dardobartoli
2 minutes in and the interviewer has interrupted the guest twice... goodbye

Listening to Ben shows how good Valentino is as he rode Suzuka 8 hrs (Superbike) and won with Colin Edwards.
  • @cyclenews

  • Awesome to see Ben giving an interview. Such a demon on the breaks. Got to see Ben a lot in TX when you came to a CRMA.

  • @rastamoto
I got to see him double his one year in WSBK. Miller Motorsports park in Utah. It was so awesome!!
  • @codeboy_henry
2009 WSBK was the greatest sport entertainment I've ever seen. Elbowz is the man.
  • @madvente
Should have become one of the greatest/most successful motorcycle racers - such a shame about those debilitating injuries.

Mr Spies, sir you simply rocked. I followed you during your time in the AMA and in the Super Bikes series and it was a pleasure to watch, sorry about MotoGP, I humbly believe it was perhaps a combination of a completely different bike, race medium, not having a crew who is familiar with your style of riding bike set up and many other little things that in the end make a very big difference, all said and done I have no doubt that when your name is mentioned it will be associated with that of a premier superbike rider👍👍.

Rode with you in East Texas some years back, Love some SPIES! Still have my signed photo of him jumping in MX

The track he's referring to is B.I.R. Brainerd International Racway in Minnesota USA. The Front Straight Is an NHRA 1/4 drag strip turn one is at the end after where the 300mph cars leave the strip. It's one of the fastest corners on a road course in the world. It's very scary. For a track with very little elevation change its an awesome track.
