The Goddess Cybele, Ancient Frame Drummer ⚪️ with Barbara Gail

Throughout the ancient Mediterranean world, artifacts depicting goddesses, priestesses, and community women with their frame drums have been prolific. Barbara Gail presents one of these ancient frame drummers, The Great Mother Goddess Cybele, while showing one of Layne Redmond's images of a terracotta Cybele, possibly from Myrina (Asia Minor), dating the 2nd Century, BCE.

As Layne explained in her seminal book, "When the Drummers Were Women", during that time, women were the primary percussionists, and the frame drum was their central instrument.

Drumming, singing and dancing, for both ceremony and celebration, were some of their essential skills, using rhythm, sound and movement to rouse community consciousness and attain spiritual awareness for healing and divination.
