My West Highland Way journey - Milngavie to Fort William (Ben Nevis)
I solo hiked 96 miles in the Scottish Highlands at the end of September! My journey was full of challenges but also Incredible moments over the 7 days.

This film is intentionally slow so you can relax, enjoy the scenery and feel like you're hiking with me. Apologies the audio quality isn't the best, I'm new to filming and don't have proper equipment yet (plus the wind was insane).

Kit List - Everything I took / bought along the way:
• rab jacket (cirrus jacket, was waterproof)
• sun hoodie (also rab, very lightweight)
• 2 t-shirts
• 2 pants
• 3 pairs socks
• hiking trousers
• waterproof trousers
• Fleece (to wear at camp / accommodation)
• slide on shoes (for camp / accommodation)
• hiking boots
• sunhat & glasses
• wooly hat
• lite 700 sleeping bag (I believe polyester, would recommend a stronger tog)
• tent (blackthorn highlander, don't recommend)
• inflatable sleeping mat with pillow
• jetboil
• microfibre towel
• flint
• camping spoon
• 1.5l and 330ml water bottles
• lifestraw water filter
• ankle support, blister plasters
• toiletry items (sunscreen, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, talcon powder, wet wipes, toilet tissue, hand sanitizer, vitamins, razor)
• 8 camping meals + snacks
• power bank (was needed!)
• electronics & chargers
• waterproof rain-cover for rucksack
Osprey Rucksack 44l

If you go in summer take midge spray and a midge net hat

I packaged everything except the tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping mat into 5 dry bags for example I put all my dry clothes into the largest dry bag and electronics were in a small dry bag, items I wanted easier access to I put in the zip compartments of the rucksack.

I was quite unlucky with the weather, it's very changeable could be hot & sunny one minute then storming the next. Hope this helped!

  • At the start I had to remind myself that this video meant, that you obviously survived. It's really good to see, how far you can get with determination, even when your gear may not be the best suited and you aren't too prepared. Don't know you, but still very proud of you!!

I watch so many trail videos, but I have to say this was one of my favourites. What a beautiful soul you seem to be! Your spirit in this was so infectious and it was lovely to see both the ups and the downs. I bet your parents were so proud when they saw this video. You did so well. I look forward to seeing many more adventures in your future ❤
  • @Sldundee
Reminded me of when I did it in the rain and it’s so miserable at times but you look back the next day with fond memories! About to do WHW again in May. Hoping for the sun! Well done!

Watching this for the 2nd time! I've done a few long distance treks and initially watching your trek I was almost screaming at my laptop but 100% by the end end of it it I was cheering you on and genuinely happy for you! Definitely upgrade your kit and please keep doing it! Ive never met you but i truly felt proud of you by the end!
  • Well done 👏👏there’s nothing better than learning by your own mistakes. Takes guts to do it on your own first time.

Such a great and often brutally honest video. There’s so many fluffy postcard perfect West Highland Way videos on YouTube that paint it as an almost effortless cosy journey with all their years of experience and expensive camping equipment, but seeing a real relatable new person like yourself out there and overcoming the horrible weather, cold and pushing through with sheer determination and heart was so uplifting and inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing the highs, lows and real adventure. Do the Pennine Way next! 😊
  • Maxi well done I love your enormously positive personality and wish you all the luck in the world. Starting WHW tomorrow nut staying in accommodation . It will be my second trip WHW and I love it. Awesome 👏
  • Maxi I was utterly gripped to this video. I live at loch fyne ( not far from Lomond) this had me totally feeling such admiration for you. Maxi I’m a mum of a 32 year old …. Always tell your parents where you are lol …. I’m sure they would have worried but also had been as proud as you felt. I was crying with you at the end. Thank you for such an honest video . Please do more

This was great to watch. Well done for completing the hike! I started the walk on 19th September and had a very similar experience to you, especially the rainy night outside Kinlochleven. Woke up in the middle of the night with a puddle in the corner of my tent :' )
  • @ranbirsingh7666
Maxi, absolutely brilliant video / film buddy. Watching this I’ve made my mind up and Iam going to attempt WHW .. don’t know when BUT I will 😅
  • @jacklindsay5588
Enjoyed the video. I go back and do the way often to keep fitness up. Knowing obviously nothing bad happened to you allowed me a good chuckle. Particularly the bit above kinlochleven where you were going to wait out the rain rather than get the tent up. Schadenfreude aside it's the miserable bits that make it more of an adventure. Well done and all the best.

Brilliant, I've wanted to do this for a while,, so nice to know there are some vegan options for food along the route thank you 🙏👍👍👍
  • @ShanOutdoors
I loved this! It brought back so many wonderful memories for me! Thank you for sharing!
  • @ervinslens
Breathtaking episode, these shots are just unmatched! 👏👏
  • Fab video! Thanks for sharing, really enjoyed it. I'm off in a couple of weeks, not camping but in hostels. Slightly panicking as I've stupidly picked the hardest days for my long ones without realising 😅
  • Great video Maxi. You are having a not very good whether but you all way stay positive and happy. 👍
  • @Mike-fj2cw
Well done young man. I really enjoyed watching you complete the trek and was happy for you to overcome your problems with the stove etc. I hope to do the same trek myself one day but being in my 50s I may have to break down the journey to more camping stops. Oh, and I'll buy a tent that goes up outer first! Cheers

Great video Maxi. I'm hoping to do this hike next year in May as part of an ambitious John O Groats to Lands End so have been watching plenty of hiking videos of the West Highland Way, and this was one of the most enjoyable! Thanks for the video and I hope you get to experience many more adventures in the future.
