From Sharkboy and Lavagirl to the Nintendo 3DS, the reign of 3D in media and pop culture was a bit of a weird time.

I recorded a really boring video on my 3Ds and turned on 3D mode and called it a "movie" when I was little and forced my family to watch.

The late 2000's-early 2010's was such a surrealist era and its nice to finally see it being covered and addressed!
  • Films that actually used 3D immersively were Coraline, Rango, James Cameron's Avatar and Martin Scorsese's Hugo, The How to Train Your Dragon Trilogy, Rise of the Guardians and the first Croods. Some of these had a great director at the helm while others on top of animation had the great Roger Deakins as a visual consultant, helping the films hold up visually both regular and 3D.

It's funny to think that despite the 3DS being one of my favorite systems ever, I rarely ever touched that 3D slider. I wonder how differently the system's history would've been if they didn't have 3D, and just put that money into better specs and materials

oh my god this era was hell for me as a child with chronic migraines. My school friends would invite me to a movie and I had to make sure it was 2d otherwise I couldn’t go and I always felt like garbage and would get made fun of. I cannot overstate how excited I was when the 3d cinema experience obsession ended. I remember the dread I felt when I arrived to a screening I assumed was 2d, only to be handed those god awful “real D” glasses at the entrance.. never failed to make me sick
  • I watched over half of this video not noticing how small your channel is. I assumed this was a bigger channel. I do not understand how this doesn’t have more views. You did a great job with this and I hope your channel blows up soon! Edit(3/9/2023): YOOOOOOOO!!!! YOUR CHANNEL BLEW UP LETS GOOOO! I’m happy for you!
  • As an early 2000s born person, it reminds me of the time when I was a kid in the late 2000s to early 2010s after Avatar became the most financially successful movie of all time, every movie company forced this 3D stuff on us for the next few years, even going as far as to make 3D BluRays and the 3DS as you have iterated. After the trend died, I eventually noticed that they hadn't done much with it since then except for IMAX and local cinemas bringing 3D back just for Avatar screenings.

this made me realize i don’t remember what 3d movies look like and now i really wanna rewatch the new avatar in 3d
  • The only 3D film I ever saw as a kid was Tangled, surprisingly. I had no idea what to expect, and I’ll admit Disney did a great job at incorporating it into the movie. I’ll never forget watching the lantern scene and looking around as it looked like they were literally flying around me. It’s one of the reasons why Tangled became my favorite movie of all time, so despite it being kind of a dumb fad it was amazing to me

Not even a thousand subscribers yet, and you're one of the best sounding channels out there. Good luck in the realm of YouTube, I hope you reach that thousand subscriber milestone.
  • I remember having to watch sharkboy and lavagirl as part of an art class, in 9th grade, I remember that we accidentally played the 3D version and the film was slightly blurry because of it, the problem was fixed later on and we finally played the 2D version.

The “new” 3DS greatly improved the viewability of the 3D, where as long as it’s properly calibrated, sensors on the device will track your face and know where to angle the 3D. You have to do an initial calibration when setting it up, and then you can go back to the settings and redo it if you notice issues later. Certain games use it in really nice ways, like many games having their cutscenes animated in 3D, so while playing on my new 3DS LL, I like to turn it on for that spectacle at times, but it gives me a headache if I turn it on for too long, sadly. The face tracking makes it very usable except for that.
  • I've sadly never experienced that 3D movie experience. However, I do have nostalgic memories of watching Sharkboy and Lavagirl with my siblings. It being ironic or unironic is up to you.

I remember watching the "Journey to the center of the earth" movie at the movie theater when I was a kid. I had forgotten about this movie but as soon as you talked about it I remember the mouthwash scene lmao, you definitely unlocked a lost memory in my brain. This channel is about to blow up as soon as you get more content out, these videos are really cool to binge watch (just watched most of them).
  • Spy Kids 3 was my intro to 3D movies and it blew my mind at age 5. Cut to 10 years later and I was cursing myself for not specifying that I wanted to see the 2-D version of the movie and had to pay extra. My DVD copy of Coraline came with the 3-D glasses and I still have them, even though I don't watch it in 3-D anymore
  • I was a pretty big fan of the 3D on the 3DS myself, it made catching beetles in Animal Crossing a LOT easier because it was easier to gauge the actual distance between my character and the beetle. Also it was always amazing in Cutscenes

Avatar The Wya of Water was the first 3D movie I've seen in at least over a decade. Honestly I think it was worth it. Some scenes in that movie really benefited from the 3D. James Cameron is probably the only guy that actually likes 3D movies.

I remember when 3D movies started becoming extremely popular in the 2010's and people were doing the nerd glasses thing. I was one of those kids who loved mustaches, nerdy glasses, and poop emojis so I can totally relate to that era XD. My dad thought the idea was so cool, that he actually got a 3D TV that we had for a couple of years before he sold it to get an OLED TV that we have now. We still have two copies of avatar because one of them at 3d capabilities and the other was a regular bluray XD. I also remember how cool my 3ds was when it could do a 3d affect without glasses, and I actually still have my 3ds xl from 2012 that I play on. The 3d affect now hurts my eyes on it so I rarely use it. I know the new one has a better one, but I never bothered to upgrade because I really like my original one. 🥰

I actually like the 3DS' 3D. I don't use it all the time on every game but it's useful when I might need to be able to see depth a bit better, and it looks pretty neat. The intro video for MH3U looks awesome in 3D. Mind you I have the "new" model with the eye tracking 3D.
