Valve is typically more suited or known for being a platform where you buy games, but they've been making hardware like their Index! They did make a controller as well, but it didn't catch on, so they've pivoted to making the highly anticipated handheld gaming device... the STEAM DECK!

I'm pretty convinced that Valve is only able to deliver quality like this because they're a private company. No shareholders to please, no strict profit goals to meet. They are content to deliver high quality even if it shaves down on their own margins a little bit. Had they been a public company, this would be nowhere near as good as it is. Good job Valve.

Linus slamming on the case, while the Steam Deck is still in there, classic.
  • I'm so impressed about the packaging quality, not a single plastic waste.

0:41 Among the different locations, in French, there is "Sur le trône" (On the Throne) which is a very French expression, and very slang, to designate the toilet. It's this kind of attention to detail that makes Vavle so amazing.

can't believe he didn't say "if you catch my drift" when talking about replaceable thumbsticks.
  • @Canditan
The charging port on the top is a good idea in my opinion. I get annoyed about the port being on the bottom of the Switch so often, because you can't prop it on a table while charging
  • Glad you mentioned the capacitive sticks, the touchpads also not only click and track like trackpads, but you can assign and differentiate between a full click and a light touch, which I though was really cool, comes in handy for games with inventories or menus that benefit from quick accessibility, like the ship screens in Elite Dangerous or the inventories of No Man's Sky.

I think that Valve is so good at audio and devices because their team are often gamers or audiophiles. The people who designed the device are in tune with what the people wanted.

I love that the first thing he does it smash it with his fists. It was in a case, so dropping it wouldn't have done much. Guess that was the next best option lol
  • This is a brilliant way to do packaging, just use he carrying case as packing material!
  • @PoopSunday
2:40 yea I think they were thinking of us bedtime gamers when they put the port on top 😅

Love the fact it has a case that is actually a useful case, and not just cardboard you throw :D BTW the space in the back seems to be a cradle for the charger. Considering that the deck takes all the space in the case, seems to be highly probable to have an external area to put your charger in

I love that Valve went for ergonomics and full-size analogue sticks over flatter profile and smaller Switch-style sticks. Those are the two glaring issues with playing the Switch in portable mode: my hands cramp up after only 10 minutes.

The strap could be used to attach it on a the telescoping handle of a suitcase which is pretty useful.
  • @senraXD
I love how Steam pretty much abandoned Steam Machine and Steam Controller and put them two together and - BOOM! - Steam Deck. I hope they'll keep supporting it and release an updated version in some point.
  • @cdtxyz
Love the little nod to Portal on the inside of the box - "in a test chamber"
  • @CasepbX
Suuuuper happy to hear that the speakers are top notch! I really like when my portable device has great speakers. I recently got an ipad Pro and was shocked at how great the speakers sound on it.
  • @SonoraWolf
It really shows what Valve learned from the Index, if they ever come out with a Index 2 or something along those lines, I’m confident it’ll be awesome.
  • I can't wait! I hope this will succeed! Looking forward to more videos on gameplay and tweaks!
  • @Squiggy8440
You could always partner up with some well loved indie companies and make themed accessories and cases for the SteamDeck, since there’s alot of gamers who love certain games but there’s not much in the way of merch ^^ i’m excited to play MTASandrock and SlimeRancher 2 on the SteamDeck. Also picontier. I have a hunch This would also be great for developers too!
