Venezuelan Election: Maduro Warns of "Bloodbath" If He Loses to Opposition Alliance

In Venezuela, presidential candidates have made their final appeals ahead of the election on July 28. Incumbent President Nicolas Maduro, seeking a third term, remains confident that he can lead the petroleum-rich country despite high inflation and a plunging local currency. In his last rally, Maduro said that only he can "guarantee peace and stability" for Venezuela. Recently, he warned that if he loses, there could be a "bloodbath". His main opponent is Edmundo Gonzalez, a former diplomat and late entrant as the opposition's candidate. Gonzalez became the opposition candidate after Maria Corina Machado was barred from public office over alleged fraud. Machado, a former deputy of the National Assembly who won the opposition primaries last October, has backed Gonzalez.
