RITUALS, CUSTOMS & TABOOS of Chinese New Year | Food & good luck symbols | What NOT TO DO | CNY 2022

Published 2022-01-17
Check out our video on the timeline of Chinese New Year in Hong Kong first before you watch this one on the good luck symbols, food symbols, and the rituals and customs of Chinese New Year. Also, at the end we go through the most taboo things, and the major what not to do during Chinese New Year items such as cutting your hair.

We go through Chinese New Year's lucky colours, why we put on fai chuns (the red little pieces of paper with black or gold writing on them), which plants and flowers are particularly auspicious for Chinese New year, such as my money tree, etc.

About HUMID WITH A CHANCE OF FISHBALLS TOURS:

“If you like our name, you’ll like our tours” is their motto.
Founded in late 2016, Humid with a Chance of Fishballs Tours is a small grassroots independent company that strives to offer authentic and off-the-beaten path tours so tourists and expats alike can get a taste and glimpse of true local life in Hong Kong.

We run tours in Hong Kong for people that truly want to see the real, true, local and authentic sides of Hong Kong. The stories and information we want to share is about the hole-in-the-wall owners, and about the local foods that have so much history and importance to Hong Kong. We go into shops that don't speak a lick of English, because we bridge the gap between the West and the East. Eat through Hong Kong's heritage, culture and tradition with us!

Support local =) Subscribe, book a tour or buy some merch =D

  • Virginia, your videos about CNY and its symbols over the past few years are the best on (at least on English-speaking) YouTube for explaining these important aspects of being Chinese (imo). Safety, good health, and great fortune for you and your family!

Another good video Virginia Chan. The room you are in is so beautiful and well designed. I heard Hong Kong was on restrictions for 2 weeks. Be safe Virginia sweetheart, because as a loyal subscriber I care about you're health.

So happy to see you back Virginia. Missed your insights and seeing Hong Kong virtually. But totally understandable why YouTube had to take a backseat as this is not your full time job and it doesn’t pay the bills. HK isn’t cheap. I hope one of these days when all this is behind us, I’ll be able to come back to Hong Kong again. I’ve missed it.

Great video! I've always asked my parents what things mean, but it's hard for them to explain to me with my limited understanding of cantonese. Would love to see a comparison of a more mandarin style CNY vs. a cantonese style CNY (if there are any differences, I really don't know). I'm cantonese myself (Canadian-Chinese), but would like to know about Chinese regional differences :)

DID YOU KNOW THE CHINESE gods IS A DRAGON? HERE, READ TRUE GOD MESSAGE Revelation 12:9 "And the GREAT DRAGON was cast out, that OLD SERPENT, called the DEVIL, and SATAN, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him." If you trust good luck, dragon, your god is Satan!
