Terry Williams' drumming was utter perfection here: simply stunning!
-
What blows me away is that He taught himself how to play guitar, and ended up creating his own unique finger picking style, in a Rock Band of all things!!!!:body-green-covering-eyes:
-
mark knopfler is still performing...he is a GENIUS!
-
i am 87 and i am mesmerized with this terrific song
-
Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists on the planet.
-
The brilliance of this performance lies in 2 particular places. First is the fact that almost every riff Mark Knopfer plays is a brilliant melodic hook. He could’ve written fifteen different hit songs with the riffs he put into this song alone. Secondly, it’s the variable dynamics and tempo of the performance. We will likely never again hear a track like this on a record, as, these days, mastering engineers tend to apply so much compression to a mix that it has no changes in dynamics:the soft parts are made loud, and the loud parts are squashed, causing a song to play at a consistent volume throughout. Moreover, in this performance, the band very subtly speeds up and slows the performance, creating feelings of tension and release. Modern recording practise is to snap every instrument’s rhythm to a fixed grid, ensuring we never feel that tension.

Terry Williams,, the reason I play drums 🤟🏴
-
That drummer is unreal !!!!
-
I’ve seen this performance a few hundred times and I never get tired of it. Greatest live performance ever.
-
This is the best recorded live concert ever. They are original and briliant
-
Yes, you are right, the drummer is the hidden hero of this performance!
-
Around the time of this concert they were the biggest-selling band in the world.
-
Telegraph Road next please guys - from the same concert its EPIC 😊
-
One of the best hit songs of the late 70's.
-
The guitar was the hero but the drummer and bassist laid down an awesome groove that made it possible!!
-
the story of the song is not about themselves but of a night when Mark was walking around the city and got attracted by a band playing in a small club and no one paying attention to them but Mark thought they were great, the band in the club called themselves "the sultans of swing" and Mark made them famous.
-
More Dire Straits please🙏Telegraph road is great. So many great live performances in fact
-
Mark is left-handed person playing a right-handed guitar which makes sense since as in his case the left hand is very busy all of the time. He also wrote & arranged the music. Differing tempo was important to them, is what I think. It gave the audience a chance to contribute. xo He is also one of the only R & R artists who uses his fingers & not a pick. This is jamming. The guitar is talking to & responding to the keyboard player, you will see Mark nod to the key board player. This is live long play performances which was incredible to witness. Love Mark & all the incredible musicians he played with over so many years. x
