Set up Zigbee in Home Assistant - Using ZHA to ditch your 3rd party hubs

Published 2021-06-08
You can connect Zigbee sensors, lights and other devices directly to Home Assistant without having to use each companys proprietary hubs. This unlocks a wide variety of automations by mixing and matching different Zigbee sensors and equipment. You also get more privacy as information about your smart home isn't being sent to a companies cloud servers meaning no-one can track you.

All you need to get started is a USB Zigbee Dongle and this video!

Of the dozens of youtube videos I have watched on getting started with Home Assistant, this is by far the most straight forward, direct and easy to ingest tutorial available. Thank you.

Thanks for this. I'm pretty new to HA and your video had my roller blind controller working within a couple of minutes.
  • @KameraShy
Very clear explanation. Note: With these sensors like the Sonoff, you need to open up the back and pull the plastic tab to connect the battery.

I've dabbled in home automation for 25 years and recently started with Home Assistant in a test platform for now. This was a very useful (and simple) explanation of how to make the zigbee gear work with HA.
  • @GunnarTaserud
Thanks!!! This was realy a good explanation. I've been using Homey for some years but feels I like to take it to next level so HA is the new playground for now.

I am impressed how fast the lamp reacts when the window contact triggers. Thanks for the video, was very very helpful :)

Nice video, I'm using a sonoff zigbee bridge with ZHA. Works like a charm :)
  • i’m planning to use an 20 meters usb extension like in the thumbnail so I suppose it’s going to work! But another question, Can I use 2 dongles? 1 for the first floor and the other I’m going to wire it to the 2nd floor. it will use up the 2 usb 2.0 port on the Pi 4.
  • @ha-cn4wu
Hi there! nice video. do you have any feedback to share regarding the HA skyconnect usb "dongle" :p
  • @leetNightshade
You should have affiliate links in the description for everything you're talking about!

Hi - as always, great videos :) I have 2 questions.....1) what is the range that the dongle will pickup signee devices? 2) does the dongle HAVE to go into the (say) Raspberry Pi, or can it be installed in a router which has a usb port? Thanks and keep up the great videos :)

What are the numbers in the visualization tab between the ZigBee devices and the antenna?
  • @alamoudimoh
thanks for the video i needed it, i have one question, now i am not sure if my switches are acting as a routers, they are mentioned to be routers, so i went to one of the switches there and from there i tried to "add devices via this device" however the newly added device (another switch) is not linked to any router or the coordinator, i saw some people the visualization where routers are connected to another routers and so on. (BTW.... i am still are the initial setup so my connected zigbee devices are just less than 10, did i do something wrong? isn't add devices via this devices to activate the mesh network? or it will be activated by itself thanks in advance
  • @RossCanpolat
Awesome video. Ill be killing off deconz and moving to this now. By the way whats that light bar / led behind the lamp in this video?
  • @kylegeach2326
Great video man. Could you tell me where you purchased your particular dongle or drop an affiliate link please? I like that yours has an external antenna. My current one is all built in. Thx
  • Thanks for the video mate! What is the response time for Philips Hue motion sensors true this setup? I have noticed that connecting these sensors directly to HA there is much more delay in the re awakening time then true the Hue bridge. And furthermore, is it possible to activate scene's made in HA via Google Home? I have a monthly subscription at Nabu Casa. Thanks again!
