I've read a theory that says that Nightmare Moon was Luna's fighting form in the dream realm, originally created to fight against night terrors. Because of the stress generated after hundreds of years fighting the worst nightmares imaginable one day, she woke up at noon believing herself in a nightmare, and she did what she was used to doing with Nightmares: destroying everything. Celestia asked her to stop, but Luna in her stress hallucination confused her with the main target to destroy, raised the moon (Which is something she does when she appears in a dream) and brought Nightmare Moon to the physical realm and this one took control over her body, while her mind got trapped in the dream realm until Twilight and her Friends "woke her up" This makes sense to me because I find it weird Luna fighting against her sister over attention, being as introverted as she is.
