Have you ever wondered why “The Missing Coach” was so confusing in The Railway Series? It’s because it was all LIES! When Douglas misplaced the Special Coach, it caused a lot of trouble for James, Thomas, and Sir Topham Hatt - not to mention the huge trick the twins played on The Inspector! Will Douglas be able to rescue the Special Coach in time for The Express? Find out what REALLY happened in Episode #6 of Thomas & Friends: Back on Track!

(SPOILERS AHEAD)
It’s finally, FINALLY here! After F I V E YEARS!!

If I can be dramatic for a moment, this episode has been in ‘production hell’ for years, at least as far as Thomas YouTube videos are concerned. I wrote the first draft and started filming in 2019, but I was never sure how I wanted the episode to play out. In the draft version, the climax of the episode was Douglas chasing after James, catching up to him at Elsbridge, and then bringing the coach back to Tidmouth. Womp womp. Pretty anticlimactic, and it didn’t warrant a nice, ‘storybook’ ending with all the engines in the shed together.

I realized that I was essentially making an incomplete story. “The Missing Coach” in The Railway Series is the second part of a longer story, and trying to make it into a standalone episode, told to Edward and Percy as flashback, felt hollow to me. I then got completely sidetracked with a much more exciting episode idea, that being “Diesel To The Rescue,” as well as “Little Engine Who Believed,” and “Character Gallery” over the past year, so this episode has been completely sidelined since 2022.

It was only last Summer, a few days after I finished “Diesel To The Rescue,” that I reimagined the entire plot during a single car ride on vacation. This included the demonstration with the Inspector, TWO tender swaps, bargaining with James, the crash, the chase, and putting Douglas at the heart of the story. At that point, I felt like I would be able to rewrite the episode with lots of jokes, a bit of action, a fun climax, and most importantly, a lot more heart and emphasis on Douglas that was sorely lacking in my draft version.

I decided to totally diverge from the original story and just go all-out wacky - with a bit of inspiration from “Mrs. Doubtfire” and “Back To The Future: Part 2.” I knew I wouldn’t be able to top “Diesel To The Rescue” in terms of action, so I really tried to go for the laughs in this episode. Some of the jokes I’ve had in my system since 2019! I had to cut out SO much banter between the engines just to keep the story moving, but I still hope it gives you some laughs! This is the most fun I’ve had writing and narrating a video yet.

This episode isn’t nearly as crazy or as big a spectacle as “Diesel To The Rescue,” but it definitely has the most sets, the most shots, the most narration, and the most editing work put into it. I really hope you enjoy it, because it’s been quite a journey to see it finished!

This has to be the most unique version of The Missing Coach that's been done. I like the addition of Thomas wanting to help Douglas, seems Adventure Begins esk.

5:43 female passenger: I’ll have to walk 500 Miles!!!! Random guy beside her: and I have to walk 500 more…………! my died so many references

This version of the missing coach is so chaotic and I absolutely love it
  • This is so expertly done. I love how you got that tracking shot on a spinning turntable. Genius. So much movement and detail. Bravo!
  • This is the best version of the missing coach out there. The plot makes more sense, the models are great, and I love the humor in this. Fantastic work.
  • 5:10 my jaw dropped! That was so funny! The whole thing was so funny. The situation the twins were in was such a big dilemma and the twins switching tenders made total sense. I loved seeing them switch tenders and then the one getting lost. Also the way that the fat controller found them out was very clever. Thomas’ fury, James getting stalled by Thomas, Gordon shouting at the twins, everything was gut bustingly hilarious. Phenomenal work.

In years I haven’t heard of the cancelled episode “Missing Coach” but it feels good to remake something that wasn’t established by the company. Plus the scenes that hyped me up for its comedy, skits and unforgettable moments were. It’s a LONG LIST I tell ya! 5:11 THOMAS SCREAMING of the missing coach where the confusion and delay begins! 5:35 I love the SFX of the grumbling passengers! 6:11 “Easy Big Man!” 7:20 Thomas accusing Douglas too much… 😂 7:26 Fat Controller’s face XD telling Thomas to be quiet! 8:05 Douglas asking James for the coach but James NO! 8:28 Douglas threatening James to tell Fat Controller going over SPEED LIMIT! 9:32 Donald sarcastically looking for Douglas much to annoyance of Fat Controller… 😂 10:18 / 10:19 The bang noise making Fat Controller suspicious… 11:00 GOSH the music cue when Thomas was watching secretly! 🎼🎶🎵 11:31 Thomas panicked that Douglas brought Annie & Clarabel! 11:57 James warning Douglas of don’t take away Thomas’ beloved coaches! 12:27 “What’s wrong Thomas? Nnnnnnno coaches?” 13:45 James complaining tender engines don’t shunt. Neat! 16:13 Thomas approaching James too close to view was kinda funny! 😂 17:23 Donald (swap 10) still covering up nervously for Douglas (swap 9). 18:10 Swapping tenders quickly again. 18:18 “OH NO!” part when Douglas’ tender was taken away by accident. 19:59 Thomas pretending to have a cramp & James was 😒. 21:33 Almost 5 times Fat Controller calling Donald HAHA! 24:53 Thomas warning nobody should take his coaches: 24:59 OR ELSE… HAHA! 25:07 / 25:08 James is the enemy… 25:22 Wow the truck nearby listened the whole story! 25:28 - All engines silent looking at the truck 😠 HAHA! 26:45 WHOA! A special post credits scene nice touch! BEST VIDEO EVER TO WATCH RECOMMENDE

"This is TUGS!" - and then it payed off in the post-credits scene! Also, while I enjoy Rhysindividual's take on the story - but your take on the climax is interesting to where it's less convoluted (also I understand that taking off Donald & Douglas' nameplates is not easy since they're stuck to their boilers, so nice way to work your way around that). Also the jokes and references galore is great too!
  • @Douglas57647
I gotta say, I love how you've taken the most convoluted story from the Railway Series and created a version of it that's even more chaotic! Douglas really did have one of the greatest character arcs in the books, and this episode puts a lot of emphasis on it - I especially like how Thomas' kind words to Douglas foreshadow him rescuing Oliver years later. I also really enjoyed all the little references sprinkled throughout, like "500 Miles" and TUGS. Excellently done!
  • @jamesrowley2492
Phenomenal. This is one of the best versions of The Missing Coach. Love the reference to The Looney Tunes Show at the end as well as the Jeff Bergman Bug Bunny scream
  • @LNER_GR
I’m sure when they made the decision to scrap the special coach Thomas wasn’t too pleased considering he was proud of it.. Greatest and most unique version of the missing coach I ever seen, keep up the marvelous work ✨
  • @LNER_GR
15:30 “and I bet that someday you’ll help another engine call sodor their home” which is really clever considering he ended up rescuing Oliver and toad
  • @RhysIndividual
This was a really fun take on The Missing Coach! The references are great and so many funny moments, especially when Douglas' tender rolled away, that was my favourite scene.
  • @Hiro51730
I hate that that the missing coach was cancelled for the tv but it's not confusing so this episode is soo nice
  • @LittleOwl2003
Absolutely fantastic! Everything from the camera angles and the model work gives this its own unique flavour! Also yes I spotted that Proclaimers reference! Hope you’re doing well man, this was truly an accomplishment!
  • @tre-engines
This might be the best adaptation of this story I’ve ever seen! Great job!
  • I’m really impressed with the variety of visual effects and effects towards how you present them, script writing was excellent with more character development than and setting some moods for the future. Overall you have once again captured a fine balance of visual storytelling, 😃👍
