Turkey is celebrating its 100th birthday. Events are taking place across the country to mark the anniversary of its founding. In the capital Ankara, Pesident Recep Tayyip Erdogan laid a wreath at the mausoleum dedicated to Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the country's founder, who created a modern, secular republic from the ruins of the Ottoman Empire in 1923. The centennial is also a personal milestone for Erdogan, who has been in power for more than 20 years. But challenges loom large as Turkey looks to the future. More from our correspondent Julia Hahn in Istanbul.

I'm French and my wife is Turkish. I can say that it is the best country in the world. History everywhere. This country hosted the Roman, Persian, Ottoman and Byzantine Empires. Turks have a secret history in Europe, just like the Hungarians and Bulgarians are of Turkish origin. Turks surprise me day by day.I am now considered a Turk and I'm proud of it. Long live the Republic of Turkey

Hope the people of Turkey always remember Ataturk was a great leader, never undo what that great man ,he separated religion from politics and modernised his country, they fly the flag every where for Turkish people are very proud and takes great pride in culture history and of course their cuisine, which I’m afraid some countries have lost that sense of pride.

Türkiye is neither a western nor an eastern country. Turkey is Turkey. It is different from all of them. We do not have to live or think the way the Germans do.

Long Live Mustafa Kemal Paşa! Long Live the Republic!

Interesting comparison: Ataturk wanted a secular, modern republic that would approach the west. Erdogan steers towards a more religious, backward republic that looks east. The differences could hardly be larger.

I’m going to be traveling to Turkey later this week I can’t wait! Update: So I visited Turkey for a week as part of a tour they included visiting Greece first than spending a week in Turkey which I visited Istanbul, Cappadocia, Konya, Pamukkale, Izmir and ancient Ephesus. I have to say I was impressed with Turkey, I almost didn’t want to leave! 😂 Amazing scenery, amazing history, good food and beautiful people everywhere. I honestly didn’t expect a progressive country (in the actual sense of the word) with so much going on.

Atatürk,the founder of Turkish republic, has nothing to compare to a regular politician. However strong leader may Erdoğan be,they are of a different kind. Atatürk is the founder of a new nation,a definer of its ideals to reach more human-like life, more civilized one. Atatürk carried a nation forward.Unlike Erdoğan, he praised human logic, science, art and most importantly secularism. Erdoğan claims he carried us to be a better, weathier nation, wheras he is so obsessive with religious tools, which took us nowhere. Sorry.

Looking at the way Erdogan rules, I‘m not sure Turkey will last another 100 years... Atatürk was a real statesman and visionary. Erdogan was never and will never be in the same league - even if he likes to think so.

Had it not been for Atatürk...Turkey would have become an Iran or Saudi Arabia. ATAM nur için de uyu ❤❤❤

It is a century of the Turkish Republic, not of Turkey as a state! Turkish states across Asia and Europe are over a Millenium old ! Happy birthday Türkiye!
