Recovery of a loaded container that flipped on the 405 freeway!

Published 2019-09-02
We were called by our good buddies at Van Lingen to bring our 3 axle lowboy to transport a loaded container that flipped on the freeway. Van Lingen responded to this CHP call with their rotators and a heavy wrecker. They first split the container from the tractor and chassis, then uprighted the tractor and prepped it for tow.

Once free, they used their JerrDan rotator to lift the front of the container to allow us to back underneath and chain it down to tow back to their base.

Assisting Van Lingen in a Container Recovery

This was an unusual job for us, as we were brought in by our friends at Van Lingen to offer support and help document the recovery itself. A loaded container flipped over on the 405 freeway, carrying more than 40,000 pounds of safes. When the loaded container flipped, it couldn’t have flipped in a more precarious place. In order to complete the recovery, the team at Van Lingen is going to have to get creative.

We brought our equipment to help take some aerial footage of the scene. From a bird’s eye view, it looks pretty bad. Again, the container is fully loaded with safes, so this recovery isn’t necessarily an easy one.

Adjusting on the Fly

Our team brought in a 3 axel lowboy to help transport the loaded container after recovery. Originally we came in one way, but we had to readjust and come from another direction since the recovery was in such an inconvenient location.

They got all the container locks off of the chasse from the container but it’s still not budging. Unfortunately, the container is at a weird angle where the container is creating pressure on the locks. The Van Lingen team uses high-pressure bags to pop the container out and then it’s go time.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

Once the team split the container from the tractor and chassis, they were able to upright the tractor and prepare it for tow. The Van Lingen team then used their rotator to lift the front of the container so we could get our lowboy in there to assist with transport.

As experts in the towing industry, we know that it’s ok to ask for help. When our buddies at Van Lingen asked for assistance with this job, we were more than happy to oblige. That’s what makes Pepe’s Towing Service the best team around.

I really like the use of the drone. This is helpful for us tourists, but also for the towing company to review and learn. Also the insurance company might also benefit their investigation. Very cool work guys!
  • and the best part of it all.... the folks sleeping in the tents underneath the bridge never even knew what was going on above their heads, that's how smooth these two companies work ;)

Good work by the tow companies! I drove big rigs in the entire LA/OC/SB/Riv area for 20 years. The Harbor area was the worst.

You can make super tight turns with axles slid forward on those landol trailers I used to use that trick to get in and out of some tight jams . You guys in L A have some impressive fleets and alot of work to show off your skills very impressed.
  • I really enjoyed the drone shots of the L.A. River. when I was a kid in the 70's I used to spend a lot of time down there riding my bicycle and mini-bike. Once in a while the cops would chase me out!
