Logotype vs Wordmark vs Lettermark. What's the difference?

Do you know the difference between a logotype and a wordmark or lettermark? Is there even a difference at all? The design world can be a very confusing place when it comes to terminology.
In this video, I explain what the three terms above mean. This can help you out if you ever come to a point where you need to create a new logo for and need to choose what logo category would suit your brand the best.

A wordmark is legally defined in the trademark registration process. It is the registration of a word in text format as a trademark devoid of any visual representation. It consists of standard characters only. A logotype may incorporate the registered wordmark but is often a more graphical representation of that wordmark. Registering a logotype as a device mark would require details that specify the visual aspects, such as tyepeface, upper or lowercase setting, custom modifications, graphical elements and any other visual treatments of that logotype.

That's that cleared up. Mind you, in the case of some large companies, lettermark has taken over the meaning of logotype/wordmark: IBM, AIG, ICI, BHP, BAT and LG to name but a few.
