Ohio Senator J.D. Vance made his nomination official as the Republican vice-presidential candidate in 2024. We host a discussion on Vance's professed economic populism with independent journalist Zaid Jilani and The Nation's Chris Lehmann. Jilani argues Vance's pro-working class image is not only genuine, but that he may also hold enough sway to bring the Republican Party closer to the labor movement. "Big business does fear Vance to some extent," he says. Lehmann counters, "I don't see the Republican Party, at the end of the day, moving toward these … redistributive policies," citing its hostility toward immigrants, who are a major driver of economic growth. "The forgotten working class is going to stay forgotten," he concludes.

  • J.D. Vance has been propped up by a billionaire since he got out of law school.

JD Vance is another shifter…promoted by billionaire Thiel who gave him the jobs in the finance sector

It's funny watching people get surprised that politicians are behaving like politicians

Many things are driving up the cost of housing, but one of the big contributor to housing's rising cost is allowing private equity to compete against American families for housing. As much as 44% of flipped single-family home purchases were by private investors in 2023 (Washington Times March 15, 2024). This is absolutely effen absurd.

J.D. Vance serves Peter Thiel, Leslie Wexner and private equity not the people of Ohio or the United States.

Kind of funny to hear Shady Vance criticize Biden for supporting Republican policies (Nafta, Iraq invasion). 😂 Also funny to hear Jilani be so optimistic about the GOP. 😮 And he is very pro-Vance. This is what happens when journalists are friends with a politician's assistants.
  • American Election: Common Parable said: from the lack of horses saddles dogs (pigs) - Biden/Trump
  • Vance preached about housing, yet was a venture capitalist. What do you think they do? Buy houses and land as a group, then raise the cost for everyone across the board. Not all of us are fools. You have no CREDIBILITY either!

A lot of nice promises that they know they won’t fulfill, but they count on the gullibility of their working class base 😢
  • Vance , update, linked financial crisis as housing problem rotted (no in Wall Street, o USA co.) but the immigrants!

Jilani - a reasonable independent neutral perspective - something DN desperately needs...
  • You saw lives and resources were willingly sacrificed for justice and it continues..

People, follow the money. Who funds JD Vance's rise in political ranks? Peter Thiel, another silicon valley millionaire. The only interests JD Vance will work hard to protect are those of these millionaire campaign funders.

I was so disappointed when i saw him endorsing trump. I was so moved by Hillbilly Elegy because Vance has nothing in common with trump. They're using him ! Shame!

I’m not saying this as an insult but Chris Lehmann sounds like a real Ron Paul guy. I remember when everyone said Ron Paul was crazy for saying it’s the Fed Reserves fault and no one would be upset about illegal immigration if the economy was good.

Democratic-leaning folks- we're forever Charlie Brown with the football when it comes to politics. Here this program, which I love, by the way, is spending time trying to understand Trump, Vance and those who support them, always giving them some benefit of the doubt to what their motives are, even though Trump, and in my opinion, Vance, show them over and over again- power-control- greed-endless ambition. But we'll discuss and discuss, trying to judge them by our own human attributes as Trump and Republicans continue to demonize all of us as Communists, Socialists, pedophiles or any other kind of ugly expression they can come up with. If we do end up dumping Biden, we better be sure we get someone who also knows how to go for the jugular. I, for one, am tired of thinking it's my duty to understand the MAGA world, while they make no effort to understand us; indeed, every word they say about us is an attempt to dehumanize us. We may have to lose our democracy to ever get it back.
