Schnuffi -- A wild European hedgehog (NO AUDIO)

Published 2021-06-15
Schnuffi and his sister lost their mother at a very young age. I took care of them and offered them a place to stay in my backyard with multiple sleeping quarters, daily fresh water, food, and occasional visits to the vet when needed. Sadly, Schnuffi's sister didn't survive the first hibernation, but fortunately he did.

Schnuffi seemed to like it here, and elected my backyard as his main place and center point of his territory. He came back even when he was e.g. 2-3 weeks somewhere else.

With 7 years, Schnuffi exceeded the usual 4 years life-expectancy of hedgehogs in the wild.

There were two feeding stations. The main one contained scrambled eggs, high-quality cat food and previously frozen insects. It is built with a labyrinth entrance to keep cats away. The secondary one contained hedgehog treats that were often stolen by a mouse. Here too, the roof was just low enough to prevent cats from getting at the food.

Apologies for the poor quality of the video. I was filming at low-light with a mere smartphone and didn't use additional light because I didn't want to spook him unnecessarily. This is the best that can be done despite heavy post-processing (even the stabilization feature failed due to the noise). Sorry for that.
