Agate Challenge FAIL! Finding beautiful rocks at Norm's Island on the Yellowstone River

Published 2020-11-19
Kate and Jim visit Norm's Island in Billings, Montana, probably one of the most hunted of all Yellowstone River beaches. It's a gray day, and all the rocks look the same. Can Kate find even a single agate on this vast rocky beach? Join her for the hunt, and for beautiful rocks and scenery. Jim provides beautiful drone footage for this video, and Kava... loves to run around. :)

  • Any rock you pick up that puts a smile on your face is a keeper! We got to enjoy your and Mr. Did’s company...I think it was a nice time!😄👍
  • @jcoutdoorfever
It’s not always about finding agates. It’s about the time you spend with friends and family. Great video.

Now you know what its like rock hounding at most places where a lot of people go! yes all the pretty agates are carried off every summer lol. This is why I like to find spots that are off the beaten path! You still had fun though, so that's all that matters.
  • I really enjoy watching your video, with the nature, knowledge on those rocks you picked. You continuously impart to us precious knowledge and inspiration to take care mother nature.I love to watch your dog just like with Theo's'dog and that of agate angler 's dog Kip.They are all adorable

It's so cool to see this place in video. That was one of my stops on this summer's roadtrip. The mosquitos were so thick that even all my big spray couldn't abate them
  • You are right about how beautiful the rocks are on that river. I didn’t find any agates in Livingston but I found some beautiful rocks.
  • Gotta love the plastic trash can in the backpack!😃 I've done that with coolers that leak. Great video! Thanks!
  • I had to laugh at your backpack...to me it seemed like a super great idea for an emergency potty ;) Oh ya just gotta love getting older
  • Thanks for your honesty...and some pretty rocks! It would be disappointing to go to Norm’s with great expectations. It seems that east of Billings is the better option.

I am so glad you said what you did about agates. You good folks are so spoiled up there. I recently did a little "urban rockhounding" and found one of the most beautiful rocks I have ever seen. I don't yet know what it is but it cut and polished beautifully. Of course, me, being a newbie, find a lot of duds too but that is part of the learning experience for me. I am still going to make it up there to find those beautiful agates but for now, I just pick what is pretty to me snd go for it. Keep up the good hunts. Blessings on you and Jim and HAVAGUDUN!

Awesome adventure beautiful finds as always great drone work thank u
  • Kate you had me at "banded churt" lol. Since you are at the river , what about taking a bucket with you and wetting a patch of the bank to see if there are any agates hiding under the silt . Another thing I was thinking is going around the larger bits(no I don't mean the honking big trunks lol) of driftwood and moving it a bit to see what it's hiding . Kudos to Jim for coming to the rescue of his fair maiden by trucking back up the trail to get your spray bottle :) See you next time :)

I loved the opening speed walking down the path. It looked like you were on a skateboard. It’s ok if you don’t find any agates, other kinds of rocks are cool too. Plus, you got to go out to another beautiful place.

cool over head shots !and my drone sits in package, I tried to fly it and lost it over bushes, broke a propeller and now back to practice;ice mode , meanwhile the kid is a drone expert at birth it seems, lol, it will be a while before they give me a pilots license ,lol, happy hunting.
  • That rock at 2:46 didn't see it sliced. I love the variety. The black and white bits rock I'm needing that name... porphyrated basalt... that's what I needed
