Seed man waves hands in front of slides.

In this episode I attempt to introduce the concept of a linear congruential generator to a viewer who is aware of algebra and ideally of modular arithmetic. I don't do a very good job, so if you have any specific questions please ask and I'll do my best to answer them - lectures (especially with me as the lecturer) are a poor format for conveying this material.

Eventually there will be links to both the slides and some appropriate explanation of modular arithmetic here, and possibly an errata.

A lecture on Minecraft, Math & Computer science all at the same time ? This is a dream come true !

"I'm mathew bolan and I will be your professor this semester" Mathew go become a professor

Watching my university lectures that I'm weeks behind on? Nah Watching lectures on Minecraft RNG? Definitely
  • You’re absolutely mind-numbingly impressive. You’ve come a long way from telling me the distances between planets, measured in light years, of course, in your basement almost a decade ago. Keep up the hustle. - Bucky

I'm super unexposed to math and computer science but I found this fascinating! I play alot of Minecraft and love attempting to understand the seed generation process and how you reverse engineer it! Minecraft is amazing and this video was awesome!
  • I really really hope for a minecraft meme video similar to "Watch for Rolling Rocks in .5 A Presses" to go viral in the near future. And we're on our way~♡

Very cool! I study math at Stanford and it's always interesting to see some of the more elementary stuff (modular congruences, elementary number theory, the like) appearing in games I enjoy. You did a great job making the math intuitive! I could definitely share this to non-math-friends with minimal explanation (not because this is at all obvious, simply as a product of your good teaching). Awesome work.

This is why Matthew is basically my speedrunning hero. Seriously, you have nooo idea how much I've wanted this video. Plus, i don't think I've ever seen your face before!

i dont know when you were in 6th grade but they didnt teach me algebra till high school. still had to google a bunch of things to keep up. and i loved every minute. you do a very good job at keeping your energy high but not too high. keep up the series, i look forward to the rest!

This was such an amazing watch! I‘m really looking forward to the next parts to this series.
  • There's me thinking I beat Minecraft with mathematics because I locate end portals by solving the intersection of 2 ender pearl vectors. Then there's Matthew Bolan that actually takes it to another level and reverse engineers the seed generation so he can just spawn in above an end portal :')

I love these kinds of videos of yours on such complicated topics, you explain them really well! I can't wait to see the rest of the coming episodes. :)
  • @comface
I feel like I've seen this explained in previous videos but none of them were as well described and engaging as this lecture. Very well done and I look forward to more!

Wish I had this class in high school Matt 🤯
  • Great video! I'm not super familiar with modular arithmetic but you did a great job explaining it! I hope you make another one of these.
  • @jBun12
This is exactly what I've been wanting to learn to do, keep up the great vids and can't wait to see the next few!
  • @Nooticus
Got around to watching this today! Really exceptionally clear explanation as I understood 95% of it and I’ve only ever done what you’d call 6th grade algebra! This lecture format works really well too! Looking forward to the next one already :P

Very interesting, looking forward to more videos on this!
