I stand corrected! Captain Hook did in fact had a pocket watch! It can be seen when he's waiting on the bomb he sent to Peter Pan to explode! It seems the US VHS cases where white instead of the transparent ones from Europe I was more familiar with! Sorry! I grew up in the US, and I'm used to seeing cassette tape boxes being made of opaque white plastic. I guess it was different in Europe

To me, this looks like a left-side bookend, which makes me wonder if another set with more villains - or possibly one with princesses or heroes - will be released in the future to serve as the right-side bookend

Captain Hook had a pocket watch! The Crocodile ate it along with his hand, that’s why it makes a ticking noise that he’s afraid of. You’re right we don’t ever see it though, because it’s inside the crocodile.

The apple and other accessories look great but I agree the VHS tapes don’t scream “VHS” to me. Yay for new Disney Minifigs!! ..now fingers crossed for a Belle minifig one day 🌹⭐️

I grew up in the 90s and these are actually very nostalgic. I had each of these movies on VHS and the covers did indeed look very similar to how they are portrayed here. Little mermaid and ursala would have been a great 5th VHS to add to this.

As a display piece i agree it looks really mediocre, but i have to give credit for those minimalist images of Jafar and Melificent on the cases. Those just look beautiful. I wish they had made art pieces like that the focus of the set instead of the non-diagetic objects

Totally agree that we needed actual Villain icons--not items with villain branding! I just wish that the VHS cases opened up to hold the VHS tape. I will be building the VHS cassette separately.

I agree with you, in comparison to the Harry Potter Icon set, this one is a bit underwhelming. I feel like they should have stuck with books as a base to keep a timeless feel, but also in reference to the openings of many of these films.  I also think better icons could have been used: - A Half Painted Red and White rose for the Queen of Hearts could have worked, and we know lego can do roses well. - Ursula's Shell Necklace would have made sense for the Little Mermaid - Maybe Jafar's Cobra Staff or even Iago could have worked well for Aladdin. - I kind of think Captain Hook's actual hook could have been an interesting build And then maybe they could have had books for Maleficent, Gaston and maybe Cruella De Vil, because she is definitely an icon of a villain. They could have also had some fun and thrown in Yzma's Llama Potion and Dr. Facilier's Talisman.

So, in the US at least, Disney VHS tapes were stylized with white plastic clamshells rather than the more common cardboard slip-covers, so these kinda do read as VHS tapes to me, but i would have rather had a more accurate recreation of the covers of the VHS tapes rather than the villain designs in the set. Obviously this is a set about villains, but if they wanted these to read as VHS tapes, they suould have made them look like the actual VHS tapes

Funny thing is, I’m a 90s kid and I watched all these movies back in the day but they were not in official pretty boxes but rather in some generic VHS cases, so not only these look like books to me as well, even if I saw them as cases they would not bring the nostalgia.

A pocket watch is Hook's iconic item from the book. The croc bites his hand off while holding the pocket watch, and giving him his namesake feature. The croc, now having tasted Hook, wants to eat the rest of him, forever hunting him. Hook can always get away because he can hear the ticking, but lives in fear knowing one day the watch will stop...

Hook's pocket watch is an important part of the story.

Normally I don't care about the Disney sets but my late brother who had severe autism was obsessed with collecting the Disney VHS' line and, being these are all from the classic era of Disney animation these are also some of his favorite movies. I know I'm a very niche case that I'm doubtful LEGO could have planned for but I genuinely got some tears in my eye seeing the loving details of this set and the recreation of the VHS tape really brings back some loving memories of my brother. You got me, LEGO, I'll be snatching this one up for display.

Your criticism about people under 25 not knowing what a VHS tape is might be fair. But this is clearly a nostalgia set for people who grew up with Disney VHS release (aka people who are 25 - 40) or even their parents. I went to Disney World last year with my partner's family and they are DISNEY PEOPLE. And a lot of the merchandise there is aimed at people like this. It's unique and targets a very specific kind of nostalgia. Personally I'm adding this to a list of Christmas items to give to my partner's mom because I know she would love it.

I'm from 1999 and I know what VCR and cassette tape is and I love it.❤📼
