The cucumber represents a horse to mean “please arrive quickly on a horse” and there’s an eggplant with the sticks like the cucumber which represents a cow to say “please leave slowly, we don’t want to see you leave as quickly as you came”. Typically Obon is the time of the year where adults get their little summer breaks (typically get days off because it’s a holiday) to return to their childhood homes and gather as family.
