I think it is REALLY important to remember that pow wows came AFTER the repeal of indigenous cultural suppression laws in the 1970s. Regalia should reflect one's tribal culture, but beading and color use on clothing is much more modern and is purposely bright and colorful as a personal connection. I think your nagua execute those principles perfectly. You absolutely killed it!

i remember reading in collage that our females would use lots of flowers (that would get like braided into a necklace and be long enough to cover the chest) shells and seeds were also turn into necklaces to cover up, since we didn't use tops (obviously i know the tube top is for todays modesties). in that text it had mentioned or from what i remember the younger girls didn't really cover up it was when ether you where by todays standards married but i was also not mandatory. i found it amazing that basically we could wear or not wear for that matter whatever we wanted back in the day, also which i knew where the hell i placed that collage paper ... it's probably lost somewhere at my moms :'D
  • I can’t believe I’m finally discovering a video like this, only a year late. Thank you so so much hermana, for taking the time to not only make this video but make it so detailed that I’ve learned more about our culture in these 32 minutes than I have my whole 21 years of life as a Puerto Rican from Vega Baja. I do have a couple questions if you happen to see this comment and care to answer them: 1. How did you/ how do I go about getting a Taíno name? And 2. You mentioned a tribe rank, do I need to be an active member in a tribe to have a rank because I’m currently in NC and don’t know of many, if any, Taíno family near me. Thank you again for this video and I will definitely be binge watching all your Taíno content!
  • Taigüey guaitiáo! Great content, I’m glad there are resources that are being made for people to learn about and take an active role in our Taíno cultural heritage! There are no other Taíno speakers or cultural descendants in my area so I’ve been loving the series! Bomatúm for the video!

Im from puerto rico and also studying our taino ancestors. Check out a book called "cave of the jagua" its a little hard to find but it contains a lot of information about rituals and symbols.
  • This was wonderfully insightful and empowering, but that moment during your speech at the 30:40 mark when you said that it was your first pow wow…the sounds of that response of acceptance and encouragement brought me to tears. Thank you for having the courage to walk the walk, sister. 🔥

Taigüei. Hahom for the video. Your regalia is beautiful. I have contacted some elders to confirm some things your shared. Only one thing I was told that isn’t done, is the drawings n the back of the nagua because that’s what we sit with. They also said that for powwow that’s great but for ceremonies it’s better to be more simple so we wouldn’t need the drawings but that could be a personal preference. Either way beautiful work. Hahom again. Seneko kakona
