It's a beautiful day to go and harass Randy the Master Pipe layer. In agriculture, tile drainage is a type of drainage system that removes excess water from soil below its surface. Whereas irrigation is the practice of providing additional water to soil when it is naturally too dry, drainage reduces the moisture in soil and thereby increases the amount of air in its pores so as to augment conditions for optimal growth of crops. While surface water can be drained by pumping, open ditches, or both, tile drainage is often the most prudent practice for draining subsurface water.
Here are five myths about farm tiling:
1. Tiling is totally unregulated
2. Tiling speeds water movement off the land
3. Tiling contributes to water quality problems
4. Tiling is not a conservation practice
5. Tiling is bad for soil health

Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

The interplay between Zach and Randy is hilarious. You should probably have your own show on Hulu.

Watching tile go in is a thing of beauty. It allows the roots to go deep.
  • @Sc-jf3yk
Goggled earth the fire site to see how far the lake was impressive fire departments. Way to go guys.
  • It would be impossible (and stupid) not to observe your preparation of the next generation, Onyx, to join you, just as you joined your father, in the life of professional farmer. Your "little boy" is suddenly a junior partner in the business. Congratulations for bringing him in (with your wife's acceptance) as well as encouraging him in your "escape" racing. Just as generations before: you are returning to the land... your son is joining you in that desire/mission. You deserve everyone's admiration..... as well as appreciation for feeding us.

Express for me to Randy a big thank you for his service to his community,
  • Hey zack….. I was just thinking……if the tile plow ever take over the world…..their probably will not be any more flooding across the world , that’s got to be a plus hey zack lol.

Seeing Onyx there brings back memories of my childhood except now I see why he had me do those things and I’m thankful for it

was looking for a Larson notification but a millennial farmer one is even better.
  • I had it explained to me once that if you dip a butter knife into a glass of water, when you take it out, the excess water will drain off of the knife but there is still water on the knife. That's all the water that the knife can hold. Soil is the same way in how much water it can hold. The rest just drains away.
  • Thank you to all of the firemen on the scene of that fire. I am sorry the business lost its building, but I am very happy that no lives were lost. It was a great video. Always enjoy learning new things.

Speaking of Moline, I come from a small village in Norway that are kalled Ferkingstad. But since a lot of people from my village moved to Moline, some of them came back after working for some years. When they came back they were called "Moliner" and as the years went by "Moliner" became a common call-name for someone from my village 😊

I remember seeing that fire on the news. It’s amazing what those small town fire departments can do being a bunch of volunteers
  • @OldePhart
Randy is seriously underrated. So low key but such a depth of knowledge.
  • @rickdekard218
That tile machine is amazing,Randy must love his job.

I’m from the Uk but I love watching American farming it’s brill

Most of our farm is already tiled with clay tile. Back in the 50's and 60's, my wife's great uncle bought a Buckeye and did a LOT of the tiling in northern Michigan when the government was cost sharing on tile. His son still has the machine. It still runs and operates as it should. It's not really as cost and time effective as the plows. I helped him tile a 40 about 8-9 years ago. It was pretty cool. The only issue we have now is blowouts. The ground washes out underneath it in one little spot and it starts washing soil down the tile line and forms a pretty good sized hole in the ground. We dig the tile up and replace the sections with black plastic and pray that we did a good job when we cover it back over. Right now we've got a bunch of blowouts and we're struggling to find a backhoe to use. We're looking into buying one instead of borrowing. Good job on the videos. You do a good job of showing and explaining all different aspects of the ag industry that most people would never get a chance to see and/or understand. Keep up the good work!
  • Thanks for another great video. It was most interesting seeing how the pipe laying machinery works and how they plan out the fingers of pipe to drain the water. Most interesting. Randy’s machine is a big beast for sure. Have seen the finished product before but never the process of laying it out. Thanks for that. That fire you showed in I believe you said Clinton was a big one. Lots of damage there. Can see why it was a real hot fire being all wood. Wow. Onyx got some good work on connecting the pipes together. Good experience for him. Way to go Onyx. Good to learn other people’s work process. Good young man. You all take care and be safe. Looking forward to the next video. Thanks. The Iowa farm boy from years ago.
