Ohio Sen. JD Vance, former President Donald Trump’s vice presidential pick, argued for gun rights at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Wednesday, a day devoted to foreign policy and national security.

He talked about his grandmother, who he called "Mamaw," and said that after she died, his family found 19 loaded handguns stashed around her house.

“It occurred to us that towards the end of her life, Mamaw couldn't get around so well. And so this frail old woman made sure that no matter where she was, she was within arm's length of whatever she needed to protect her family,” Vance said. “That's who we fight for. That's American spirit.”

Vance formally accepted the vice presidential nomination Wednesday night, after Trump named him as his running mate on Monday. During the convention, delegates will adopt a party platform and Trump will address the convention Thursday.
