As the original Renaissance Man, Leonardo da Vinci did it all; the polymath was interested in everything from art to science to writing. The famous Renaissance artist's paintings, sculptures, and architectural achievements are as stunning as his intellectual contributions to history, anatomy, and mathematics.

One of the areas where Leonardo truly excelled was inventing. While observing the world around him, Leonardo took copious notes and made sketches detailing his surroundings. In the process, he came up with practical and impractical mechanisms alike, many designed to be used as tools of destruction.

The Assassin's creed games where you get a chance to drive Leonardo's tank, gun boat, glider and other war machines is some of the most iconic video game moments of all time.

One of the smartest human beings that ever lived multi-talented on so many levels
  • Everything I have ever learned about Leo leads me to believe that his sketches were more Mnemonic devices than actual plans for a prototype. He was one brilliant sumbeach, but he was always distracted. A trait common to most folk of that mental set. The sketches were a way to remember potentially valuable concepts that he knew he would lose track of later.

The idea that Leonardo left details out on purpose is not far-fetched. He wrote many things in code; other manuscripts were backwards and could only be read in a mirror. Others were just schematics with symbols and arrows with no wording at all. Many academics argue he did this deliberately.

If he was alive today and saw all his inventions I can hear him say “You’re doing it wrong.”
  • If you think about what Nikola Tesla said about his mind. He said he doesn't need a schematic, he can picture the whole machine in his head. He days he can take the machine apart in his head down to the last screw and fix a problem in his head. It's not a stretch to think Leonardo had the same capacity.

a lot of people may not know this about him but in his younger years he also helped Ezio Auditore da Firenze on his quest to avenge the death of his father and brothers

The one thing that still blows my mind is Leonardo's city map of Imola that was so accurate and modern that it took us hundreds of years to actually see how accurate it is.

So, de Vinci was basically a renaissance Tony stark. He even had a semi iron man suit at the end of the video lol
  • Leonardo from Vinci was extremely before his time. Thank you for always uploading amazing, intricately detailed videos Weird History! I'll forever be a fan and continue to watch all of your hard work! 😃😃

He also suggested a usage of mirrors on top of castles in order to reflect beams of sunlight to either blind the soldiers, or set their ships on fire.

Question: What was up with the other Leonardos that were from Vinci at the time? Did they go by their full names to avoid confusion and probable disappointment with exchanges like, "I'm Leonardo da Vinci." "[gasp] Really?!" "No, not that one." "Oh..."? Just wondering.

The large crossbow seems like a silly invention when you consider that ballistas had been used as far back as Roman times and are essentially large crossbows.
  • Robot soldiers like that would be a good way to make a castle look strongly guarded while using actual soldiers elsewhere.

This guys voice is so recognizable and unique, I could have sworn he was the voice for something I have watched on TV before.
  • @alicerivierre
