The Personality Cores of The Aperture Science Facility were created to help the scientists run the facility and deal with an issue they had with the GLaDOS project. After many apocalyptic events, the cores saw this opportunity as a way to run Aperture their way.

Why were they constructed? Were they originally human? and how did they help keep Aperture functioning when humanity no longer could? In this video, I explore the lore and story behind the Personality Cores in Portal.

What core would you make if you worked at Aperture?
  • It’s so perfect that one small ball with a blue eye and british voice managed to almost destroy an entire enrichment center
  • So basically humans created cores to control glados but they were so good that they made them into into workers and they became little society
  • It is theorized that Wheatley was more than just an intelligence dampening sphere, but also programmed to make ideas that hinder Glados/the core in charge and prevent them, hence why he led Chell around before taking over the facility and then proceeded to hinder himself
  • I’ve always wondered if her trying to kill them all was because she wasn’t a volunteer. That they had attached the additional cores to keep Carolyn suppressed until only glados remained
  • My interpretation of Wheatley thinking he would die if he used his basic functions is as follows, the scientists/engineers didn't tell him that, the other cores did. Because they saw him as stupid, they bullied him. Maybe that's one of the reasons he wanted to leave
  • @Freemelon07
I love how so much emotion can be conveyed by a little round moving metal eye.
  • A theory i have is that glados may ne hostile due to how caroline was feeling in her last moments when she was being uploaded. She was probably angry as hell
  • @JonTheGeek
Caroline said she never wanted her personality to live forever
I'd bet that she became angry and scared when she was forced into the AI scanner and that's why GlaDos is so different.
  • 16:50 Imagine being a person and then you're uploaded to a little eyebot body and the guys who enslaved you like this say "this one makes other robots stupid. that's its purpose"
  • @volvofreak86
Not only is wheatly greatly written, but Stephen Merchant does great voicing him, really suits it
  • @LoveyLand
I think about the one turret in the tube that says “help me. I’m different” a lot.
  • @plasmatic3223
The cores being human uploads / imprints sounds canon to me. How else would Aperture be able to create AI too advanced, even be able to experience emotions and talk so much more human-like than even GLaDOS ?
  • @DreadSnortt
Just finished Portal 2 for the first time today, immediately went and binge watched all of your previous Portal-related videos. This couldn't have come out at a better time for me! Thank you!
  • One very interesting thing is that there probably is a multiverse out there that never invented the cores because GLADOS never tried to kill anyone and she insisted functioned like the scientists intended. And so they would never have tried to make the cores.

Another universe in which the scientists did find a combination of cores that succeeded in permanently
making GLADOS safe and friendly is also interesting to think about.
  • I do love the personality cores, I think valve did a lot to make them (and glados) feel very human. My favourite is the space core, I just can't help loving him. Which one's your favourite?
  • @Alkaris
Wheatley is in TF2 as one of the tools for Spy, even though it's a Valve game, Wheatley in TF2 is called the AP-SAP, which is the item used for sapping Engineer buildings in TF2, and has Wheatley voice lines tied to the item whenever you pull it out or use it to sap things.

    I just realized...
Valve intentionally gave Aperture an 'Apple'-like aesthetic. The Cores are portable pods based on the shape of an eye. They're eye-pods.
