The scene at the Pearly Gates with the three kittens in a bag is from "Heavenly Puss" (1949), and, all due respect to the creators of this, but it's never as unsettling as the original. I was an urban kid, so it seemed run-of-the-mill to me for someone to do this, but it made you no less sad. Part of the reason this short stayed with me is that it's great set-up for Tom's plot--the St. Peter cat can't let him in until he gets some "all is forgiven" affidavit signed by Jerry, and you spend the episode with the cold pit in your stomach while rooting for Tom. (I might think the notion of Tom as a serial killer would enhance the concept.) Anyway, it's truly one of the more surreal experiences of my youth.
