For most of us, the internet is virtual, made of Instagram posts, emails and YouTube videos. And, access to the vital utility isn’t guaranteed across the world. Glad You Asked host Cleo Abram wants to know: What is the internet actually made of? And, how does it work? Answering that question involves discovering how internet cables are laid in the sea, if 5G is really the future, and how balloons in the stratosphere are helping people connect.

You could say that shark took a megabyte out of the internet.
  • A moment of appreciation for the intern, who had to cut up all the ones and zeros for that one shot...
  • Been in IT for 20 years now (I specialize in cloud-based "stuff" now) and I love to see it broken down in such a simple way. I think this was a job well done. My mom, at 80 got the concept of "how does it get to you so fast?". I also showed her a light pulse through a fibre optic cable - actually I used the fibre on my compound bow sight - and sent her the word "hello" through binary. It's all pretty amazing when we step back and think about it. It's robust but yet so delicate.
  • "There is no such thing as cloud. Cloud is a marketing term" Truth has been spoken. Best definition of cloud i have came accross.

"it takes a long, long time" me: expected years them: 13 days

Vim pelo curso HTML/CSS do Gustavo Guanabara, este vídeo é sensacional. A lógica, os princípios e o fundamento do conhecimento é tudo !!!!!!
  • As a network engineer, you have told my story in layman's terms in less than 20 minutes.
  • @FlyEnri
I'm a telecom engineer and i was fascinated by how entertainingly simple and well edited this video was, congratulations! And also so surprised by so many nonsense comments about everything but the topic itself... :o

I've been across a few things that tried to explain the internet but nothing as close to being simple yet informative and easy to understand as this. Well done! Great vid.

It's something I was curious about, so I came in and watched it. It was a better video than I expected. This video explained the principles of the Internet using various visual materials, so it was really interesting and easy to understand. And it was nice to think about the importance of the Internet as well as the principle of the Internet. (It's terrible just thinking about the internet being cut off😂) I get more than the intention of entering this video. Thank you for making this great video!!
  • How does the Internet work? Vox: makes a 20 min video Me: It works nicely.

This is truly amazing. It's so crazing to think humans came up with this. It's so complex, yet we take it for granted. It's quite beautiful

My dad was always into new tech, even tho we were poor. Back in the 80s he bought a camcorder (my grandmother got it for him using a credit card). It was $2,000. We were dirt poor back then, yet now in 2022 I have videos of myself as a child, videos of me and my grandparents, my cousins, aunties, etc. i cherish those memories. He did the same thing when CD players became the thing, then with DVDs. Even tho we were poor, we had those devices years before they became affordable for our friends and family. And in 1997 he bought a Compaq computer. I was 11 years old. And my life was forever changed. I was there at the forefront of Napster, i used MSN messenger almost like the old school social media, yahoo chat rooms were all the buzz, and the MSN game chat rooms were also popular. I remember when we had an internet game where u had to help Austin Powers get his mojo back, we had QuePasa for those of us who were Latino. BlackPlanet. Then later MySpace. I have lived inside the internet since the moment i got access to it in 1997 and i never looked back. Even met my husband (almost 15 years together now) online.

I've been offering free fiberoptic internet to people in Germany for three years now and the main issue is that most people don't know anything about how the internet works and mostly don't even care about massive technological improvements in infrastructure as long as the running system somewhat works. I am so excited for more fiber, 5G and Starlink and hope people will have more informed judgment in the future. Thanks to everyone who helps building the infrastructure. Our contribution will be forgotten just as quickly as we forgot the names of those who built the highways we drive on every day, but this is for the greater good of the centuries and generation to come. Kids of the future, reach for the stars. You have the whole world to connect with.

30% of that wire traffic is apparently adult content.
  • what is happening why is everyone flexing premium ? i dont have it and can still watch it.
  • Hurricane María hit us pretty hard comunication wise People would drive hours away just to find a bit of signal to talk to their loved ones (mostly on the mainland) & let them know they were ok. This had a huge impact on our recovery. I had no idea this is how we got access to the internet. Great video! Thanks!
