In the prime of his life, Fee Waybill of the Tubes, one of rock’s wildest frontmen was lured into a seedy parlor in the underbelly of San Francisco’s notorious red light district. The rocker was captivated by a young exotic dancer who slinked around inside an enclosed booth with hardly any clothes on. … Falling into a scam, Fee kept shelving out dollar bills, trying to engage in a conversation with the dancer, but she ignored him until he finally wised up and realized he was being a sucker! Fee Waybill eventually paid enough money for the woman to converse with him, and he asked her if she would like to be a dancer with his band. She refused to answer his question, and his session abruptly ended. They say ‘Curiosity killed the cat,’ but in this story…curiosity birthed the smash hit She's a Beauty. You’ll never believe what happened next… Seriously, this is one of those rock and roll song stories that’s stranger than fiction… and I’m gonna tell you all about what happened…free of charge, of course…NEXT on Professor of Rock.

Today we have the story of an 80s classic that most know by heart from a truly unique band that doesn’t get its due credit in our latest entry into #1 in our hearts… songs that absolutely should’ve been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 but for perplexing reasons came up just short so we right the wrong. This is one of these classic 80s singalong hits that everyone knows by heart but many middle-of-the-road music fans don’t know who sings it. I’m talking about She’s Beauty be the Tubes…..Known for his outlandish costume changes and character portrayals on stage, Fee Waybill, the frontman for the Tubes, was a spectacle in his own right. One of his main characters, Quay Lewd (a play on Quaalude), was a drugged-out British rock star wearing two-foot-tall platform shoes, a feather boa, and a long blonde wig.

Standing at 6 foot 4 in bare feet, Fee's Quay Lewd costume made him tower over 8 feet tall. Tubes' concerts were filled with explosions, smoke, chainsaws, and a daredevil aerial artist. The band often spent more on their elaborate stage antics than they earned from performing. One day, Fee was tooling around the Red Light section of San Francisco’s Missing District when he was transfixed on a sign outside of a seedy parlor called the Tenderloin that read “Pay a dollar- Talk to a Naked Girl.” Well, it just so happens Curiosity got the best of Fee, so he went inside. The experience inspired the conception of the biggest hit for The Tubes…1983’s “She’s a Beauty.”

Fee attended Arizona State University with plans to study oceanography, but he discovered a passion for acting and decided to pursue it instead. Eventually, he dropped out of college and, while hanging out in Arizona's Verde Valley, met his future bandmates Roger Steen and Prairie Prince. The guys eventually moved to San Francisco. To stand out from the other acts in the Golden City music scene, Fee brought to life a variety of memorable characters during the Tubes live shows.

  • Poll: What is your pick for the Most ADDICTING SING-ALONG song of all time? One you always have to belt out?
  • @mysticwolf75
Fun fact: in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Fee Waybill plays one of the "Three Most Important People in the World", along with Clarence Clemons (of the E Street Band) and Martha Davis (of The Motels).
  • Not only is Fee a great front man, he's also a great songwriter. Thanks for showing the Tubes some love.
  • One of my favorite performances of theirs is when they were in Xanadu with Olivia Newton-John. She was doing 40's type music and they were doing hard rock. They started out doing separate parts and then blended the 2 types of music together. It was so cool to hear how well the 2 separate songs fit together by the end of the song!
  • I’ve always loved this song, not only because of the video on MTV, but just the joy you get singing it. The Tubes are way under rated.
  • @jennchi
Summer of 83! One of the best ever.

I CANNOT BELIEVE that "She's A Beauty" was never a #1 hit!! It's definitely #1 in MY heart. I have loved this song since it came out. It's absolutely brilliant and holds up after all these years.

The Tubes' performance of Sushi Girl on SCTV "Gill Fisher (John Candy), the Fishin' Musician" was killer.
  • I knew nothing of The Tubes other than "She's A Beauty". I thought of them as a one-hit wonder. I'm going to check out all their music, thanks Prof!
  • One of my dear friends once saw Fee in a bar. She recognized him and asked if he was him. He replied yes, but wanted to keep a low profile, since it was kind of a disco-ish bar. I think the Tubes' best album was Remote Control (also produced by Rundgren). It was such a dynamic tour de force, with a fascinating concept. I remember listening to it when I talked to my high school sweetheart for the last time whilst I was at Uni. AS I hung up the phone, I heard the lyric "I won't see you anymore/and if that's what love is for/then I don't understand." How prophetic those words were! Still... Remote Control remains one of my favourite albums.
  • "More Than A Feeling" - Boston "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" - Tears For Fears "In A Big Country" - Big Country "Take On Me" - A-Ha "Lips Like Sugar" - Echo and The Bunnymen "Jessie's Girl" - Rick Springfield "Don't You (Forget About Me) - Simple Minds I could go on but those are at the top of my list. :) Thanks Adam!

The opening of She's A Beauty instantly makes me turn up the radio to eleven. One of the best grooves from that time.
  • In the 80's, I lived in San Fran. My friend who's name was John, was visiting me and we went to Kearney St. As we were walking down the street, a barker said to John, "Do you want to see a naked lady?" His responds was, "Does she want to see a naked man?"

Fee Waybill, one of the greatest names in rock. And he lives up to it with his talent and creativity. The Tubes were awesome, so glad to see them get some play here.
  • Fee Waybill is still a madman and they still put on a great show, highly recommend to catch them if you can! He's also a super nice guy, and if you stay after the show he's almost guaranteed to sign stuff for you

Ok...Professor, I've got my ticket stub from the first time I saw The Tubes. I believe it was 1982. The "concert" was held at the Lambda Chi fraternity house in Chico, CA - California State University of Chico. I think I was 18 years old. Maybe 19. The Tubes were set up in a small room inside an old house. I think there were barely 100 people there. There were no spotlights, no stage, no nothing. I literally stood about 5-6' away from Fee during their performance. He had a big ole doobie he would take a hit from & then kept it between his guitar strings at the very top of the fret board. I don't have any photographs from that evening. We didn't take many pictures back then. After they were done playing, they stayed and hung out with all us students. I remember it being very fun but had never seen anything like it before. No one got out of control despite all the pot & beer floating about. I still don't understand why The Tubes were playing at a frat house in Chico. I think I heard one of the members of Lambda Chi knew the band through his father...who was some music guy...? I think about that night often and wonder - how did that event occur? I can send you a copy of my ticket stub. It's a pretty cool ticket (as tickets go). Can you find information about it? I've always wondered what exactly did I attend that night. I mean c'mon, I was standing 5' from Fee the entire time they played.

I remember almost driving my dad crazy, playing this awesome song by The Tubes over & over & over again. I would hit that good old "rewind" button as soon as the song would end. 😅 (My mom later told me she loved the song, so she didn't mind my multiple "repeats"! 😊❤) I was, of course, playing it on my huge boom-box, which my parents had gotten me for my 16th birthday. ❤😊❤ I loved the 80s....the good old days, for sure! ❤
  • @DidactDude
Steve Lukather! This song (album) probably wouldn't exist without him. The 'Toto connection' could be an entire video on it's own. Toto is the Kevin Bacon of rock and roll.
  • @1996champs
"It was definitely worth the trip to the principal's office..." So true for so many things at that age. 🙂
