Back when I was a student at university in the early 1980s, I took a legend and myth history course. One of the lectures involved her discussing Portugal's roll in the great age of discovery. The following class, the professor had mentioned that after the previous lecture, many students had come up to her to discuss what they had just learned. They were all astounded at the magnitude of Portugal's role in discovering the new world. As a result, the professor dedicated that day's lecture strictly to the influence of Portugal during those centuries of great exploration. Being of Portuguese background, I felt so proud that these students were finally understanding just how important role Portugal played in the centuries coming out of medieval Europe. Yes, Portugal kick started one of the most important periods in world history. Portugal is the sea.

As a portuguese, the resumed explanation why this is happening is very simple
    -Portugal likes fish
    -Atlantic sea has good fish
    -Portugal conquers the atlantic sea
    -Profit

There’s literally nothing wrong or crazy about territory expansion, all the fish jn the water are Portuguese and should pay their due taxes.

It's funny to think that Portugal might eventually encompass a larger population of aquatic life than people

I don't think most people would mind the extension of their EEG.
Actually 2-3 decades ago they had found a large reserve of oil fields a few miles from the mainland coast. They held a referendum and the majority of people (like over 80% if I remember correctly), voted not to drill oil. The reason is that it would probably affect their coastline and tourism, a major part of Portugese economy. So yeah, they have a lot of resources in the sea but aren't using them to attain their countries beauty, and if you've ever visited Portugal it has a beautiful coast.

Netherlands: We are expanding our territory by making land!
Portugal: We are expanding our territory...metaphorically
  • "If you live outside the Iberian peninsula you probably don't think about Portugal a lot."

Football/soccer fans: Oh, you underestimate me

Portugal, one of the very best nations of the world to live in. Weather, friendly people, awesome culture and beautiful land. You portuguese should be proud of it. From a Spanish brother...
  • Canada now: Oh Portugal, it's that faraway country I hear about in exotic tales and history books.
Canada in the future: Oh hello neighbour. How aboot some beer?

Just a correction: when Portugal was ruled from Rio, Brazil wasn't a colony anymore, it was part of the Kingdom, so Portugal wasn't ruled from its colony.
It was called the United Kingdom of Portugal and Brazil.
I think it's impossible to be ruled from a colony since if the royal family settles there it automatically becomes part of the country.
  • Both my grandparents fought in ultramar war, One in Angola and Moçambique, the other one in Guiné. The two are still Alive and the things they tell me are about the war times are so interesting and some sad like my grandpa carrying a dead friend for kms while wonded by a frag grenade, or running from crocodilos and what surprised me the most was that they didn't want to fight, they were all friends but the governments ideals are always like this. A lot of the Middle ages society in Portugal was born in the old overseas territories, my mother was born in Luanda, Angola In the Middle of the fight with shots bursting through the hospital. My uncle in Maputo, Moçambique and the majority of my friends parents were born there also. Portugal is for us the best country because of all the history that is hidden in this little piece of land 🇵🇹

I don't understand how this map can show the Portuguese EEZ from Madeira going straight up against the Canary Islands, which belong to Spain. Surely Spain also wants the sea area 200 miles around the Canary Islands?
  • Portugal : extended the ocean territory

China : finally a worthy opponent
  • @GrandAudio
Kudos to those people who are actually clearing up the beaches!
