If I remember correctly, this was fixed in Majora's Mask 3D where it does save if you play song of time and then save at an owl statue or save point.

Interestingly, I did notice that there's a tiny dialogue change that occurs after you beat the game once. Specifically, Tatl's dialogue before you chase Majora to the moon becomes different if you've already beaten the game; changing from something scared to becoming confident. Which is bizarre, because it's proof that Link doesn't escape the time-loop.

the only reason you would restart the cycle after getting feirce deity is if you used up all your magic and maybe arrows while trying to do the trials getting to the mask or fighting phase 1 of majora, no magic means you can't use the sword beam, and no arrows mean you can't shoot majora, theres pots in the room that may refill them, but if you suck at the game and waste them and run out of alternatives, there gose that firce deity mask

You can actually see the game saving during the credits in the Collector's Edition version of the game. Everytime you save on that version, the game cuts to a black screen that states the game is saving, and this also happens on this occasion.

I discovered this the hard way when I first played the game. I was quite shocked to find I no longer had the Fierce Deity Mask after playing the Song of Time.

It's the loss of the Fierce Deity mask that has always been a massive woubd to my child heart lol. IT'S SO FREAKING EPIC, YET WE ONLY SEE IT ONCE AND FOR BARELY A FEW MINUTES BEFORE IT'S GONE 😭

Yeah, when I was a kid, on one playthough my mom told me to go to bed right as I got the fierce deity mask. I was extremely confused cause yeah like you said, this went against the rules of the game up to that point

Idk how you would play the song of time. Maybe it's not in the 3DS version. In the 3DS version you enter the battle as soon as he gives you the mask and you can't play the song. The only way to leave is to win AND watch the credits or to quit without saving. It tells me about the saving at the end of the credits and there was no way to skip them

I believe it's a fallsafe. As you(Link) normally have to trade all his other masks to acquire the Fierce Deity mask. There by preventing the player from soft locking themselves.

I honestly didn't know you could play the Song of Time inside the Moon. I just assumed it would say "your notes echoed far" like it does whenever you try to warp from somewhere you're not allowed.
