MATA with Mihingarangi Forbes | Mata Reports: Fleeced - Perpetual Leases and Māori Land | RNZ

Tina Olsen-Ratana is a landowner who’s landless. For over a century, her whānau’s whenua has been caught in perpetual lease, which prevents them from utilising it. As New Zealanders debate the notion of ‘one law for all,' we look at the intergenerational impact of the perpetual lease system on Māori landowners.

Thank you Mihingarangi, Annabelle & team for telling our story. Although our whanau know the korero, it hit different seeing/hearing/feeling it in this piece and the dramatisation sent it home. All my whanau are greatful & thank you so much ❤

This has been an open sore on the integrity, justice and equity of Aotearoa for a century. Time it was fixed
-
This was and is, so abhorrently wrong. As is the attitude of all govts, including the current, to do nothing about this colonial subordination. Thanks for reporting on this, and so powerfully. Respect.
-
Excellent report Mihi. Sadly, in Aotearoa the settler colonial mentality still prevails and the injustice of Maaori perpetual leasehold land is the proverbial can been kicked down the road. It is a strength of maaori to be able to absorb such inequity and yet show integrity, self-respect and patience. If the gumboot was on the other foot, would the farmers display the same principles? Justice delayed is justice denied.
-
Those farmers sounded pretty entitled, willing to kill for "their" land they rekon😳🤦♂️🤦♂️ A lease is not a title.
-
Thanks to the RNZ team for letting us know about this litle known part of past and current NZ history. Keep the good work.

Judicial review. This is the single biggest injustice in our country today

Thanks Mihingarangi and team for this great doco. This has given me greater resolve as a Tangata Tiriti to expose this long-standing injustice amongst my networks of influence by sharing this doco and/or having friends over for a "viewing" and discussion afterwards. As the historian interviewed commented. If the land belonged to Remuera landowners (or any pākēhā for that matter) the law would no doubt have been amended years ago. I was also humbled at the attitudes of those most impacted, especially Tina who embodies that generosity of spirit and quiet courage, despite generations of deep hurt and injustice, that allowed tangata Tiriti to share this whenua in the first place and gave us a place to call home in this country.

Brilliant article. In Tairawhiti there is also the issue of Maori Landowners paying market rent to lease and live on their own land which is administered by Te Tumu Paeroa using antiquated leases. We would love to follow up this program with that issue too.

This is so eye opening, thank you, notice he couldn’t even look mihingarangi in the eyes, it is theft, no denying that.

Thank you for this story of one of the continuing injustices against Maori in Aotearoa. I hope that we can all lobby our government, from our local MPs up, to find common sense, fair, solutions. It's all of our responsibility to fix this; us Pakeha need to get off our backsides so that the victims know they are widely supported, and so they don't have to carry the full weight of this alone. Let's all try to fix what remains so blatantly unfair.
-
I never knew this and am saddened for maaori and disgusted with out govts throughout the years. Our government needs to sort this now and back pay maaori .
-
Without the lands from indigenous people, Pakeha or white settlers would have nothing to build on, to prosper with. Every country you hear about the white people/govt stealing from these people for centuries. Really heartbreaking to hear and watch 😢😢
-
Why would they demand people buy back land that was stolen in the 1st place - one would think the crown would have to pay back money to these people for loss of profit.
-
A huge eye opener and a real travesty, Kia ora Mihingarangi, you are an incredible reporter.
-
The crookery continues. This is why lease agreements should have a "no first right of refusal" clause within it. Have your lessee reapply at the expiration of any lease. Maori owned land is around 10 percent less in value than general land.
-
99 years peppercorn lease . They come up fot renewal. Much of this land has moved into conservation estate
