The former fire chief who was killed at a Pennsylvania rally for Donald Trump spent his final moments diving in front of his family to protect them from gunfire that rang out Saturday during an assassination attempt against the former president.

On Friday morning community members lined the street to watch a procession of Firemen, EMTs, and veterans process with Corey Comparator's casket to his funeral, in his honor.

"It's our honor to honor Corey. That's why we're all here today. He stood for us we're going to stand for him," said Don Barry, a Senior Ride Captain who drove hours from Palmyra, Pennsylvania, to join the procession.

The funeral was held at Cabot Methodist Church in Cabot, Pennsylvania.

At the conclusion of the funeral, three firefighters stood on the back of the fire truck carrying Comperatore's casket, trailed by more than 100 other emergency vehicles from fire departments across the region.

The procession traveled through Sarver, Pennsylvania, past his former fire company and his home on the way to lay him to rest.

"We're here to support the family of Corey Comperatore. He's a pillar in our community. We're also here to support America. We were attacked. Our country was attacked senselessly and we lost lives," said Sarver resident Katie Fuhrman who watched the procession with her family. Fuhrman was also in attendance at the Trump rally when shots range out.

Mike Choma, another Sarver Community member said it was no surprise that so many people showed up to pay their respects. "Especially volunteer firemen, retired volunteer firemen, it's a family. You saw that today," he said.

Comperatore, 50, worked as a project and tooling engineer, was an Army reservist and spent many years as a volunteer firefighter after serving as chief.

His friends and neighbors remember him as an upstanding member of their community.

"We didn't personally know Corey, but we knew he was a big part of the community. We wanted to do something nice to honor Corey, so we decided to put a sign in our yard for everyone to view as they went by today," said Laura Hartshorn, a Sarver, Pennsylvania resident who lives just under a mile from the Comperatores.

Hartshorn sat in her yard with family members, as many other community members did, to watch the funeral possession and pay respects to the family.

"Here in our town we just support one another quite a bit. And we have each others backs no matter what and God is really heavy presence in our community."

Two other people were wounded at Trump's rally: David Dutch, 57, of New Kensington, and James Copenhaver, 74, of Moon Township. As of Wednesday night, both had been upgraded to serious but stable condition.
