How to "Cheat" at Beginning Weave Poles

Published 2018-10-22
Master weave poles easily in half the time or less! If 2 X 2 or adjustable weave poles and guide wires aren't working for you and your dog--or even if they are, but you'd like to fast-forward your dog's weave-pole skills--try this easy, old-fashioned weave-pole hack. Once your dog has committed the serpentine movement to muscle memory, then you fade the lure ASAP and begin building speed and independence. Gradually distance yourself and vary your position and behavior relative to the poles. Send your dog from different directions and varying distances to a "dead toy" or treat at the end of the weaves.

I started my adult Chihuahua on poles today, she clutched my leg, (rode it), through 20 poles, in essence, I STARTED weave poles today.
  • I love how attentive Maisie is. When you called her over, she came, and she didn't take her eyes off of you.
  • This was really interesting. Thank you. Good to know that this is still an option to try ( as I’ve read the luring method is not the “modern” way.) The muscle memory definitely makes sense. My young dog has loads of drive, but is struggling to weave now I’ve closed the channel width to a few inches. I’m going to give this a try. x

Glad I found this old video! I started agility training in may this year and the instructors recommended using guiding wires and we've been training upwards of 30 sessions now with some results but it's still not possible to remove the guiding wires completely. It was just really boring. Tried this out and it didn't take longer than 10 minutes until she was doing 12 poles without guidance from my hand... So thanks! :D

You could also use a long spoon and put some peanut butter on the end for a small dog. Great ideas ❤

  • Thanks so much for this video. This was the method I thought of when I decided to start agility. But I joined a class (figured I would learn from professionals) and they all said this method was no good. They push the 2 by 2 method and look down on even using guide wires. We had minimal success using the 2 by 2. My dog is an accomplished trick dog, but the way she learns is you have to just teach the whole trick at once. If you try to do it in "pieces" and put it all together, it just doesnt work. Its almost like she says "well yesterday this was correct and you treated me, but today it isnt correct and I have to do something different?" and she doesnt want to continue. So the 2 by 2 she would do but when you add more she is like, "huh?" They all say dogs can count, and she sure can! So the 2 by 2 she will do correctly, add more and she is like "nope." Knowing this I wanted to just teach her right from the start THIS is what you need to do to get your reward. I took a short break from classes and I have 2 weeks to get her to learn this. Starting tonight!
