Some Disney folks are here but it's still overwhelmingly Final Fantasies hanging out for now. I'm sorry for the thumbnail for this episode.

"Hey, have you heard of someone named Ansem?" that is a loaded question, Yuffie
  • @miradrgn
"The 99 puppies were lost amidst the chaos of their world's destruction." is still such a powerful sentence
  • @Antonicane
"I am sure that the Heartless will be explained better." Famous last words.
  • Fun fact, Kristie Ramano uploaded a youtube video of her playing the early part of KH1 a few years back. So if you ever wanted to hear Yuffie speak the few lines of text box dialogue we get from her in this part, congratulations your wish has been granted.

I love how every time Ironicus asks a question, Chip has to catch himself because the answer just changes from game to game across the series.

22:28 Remembering Sora is a child (albeit one that has no regard for his parents), I thought it was really sweet when Donald Duck and Goofy were trying to cheer him when he was overwhelmed. Even though they don’t know Sora, they cheer the kid up, because that’s what they do as classic Disney characters. I have no attachment to this series having barely played it, but I thought that was really nice.
  • Man, I miss the Shadowy Council Of Disney Villains. And I say that as someone who LIKES Organization XIII (... at least the OG flavour. If you know you know).

I can't believe Ironicus immediately understood the nature of the Heartless.
  • @RSATT01
The best part about Kingdom Hearts is that "This boat runs on happy faces" could actually be literal.
  • @MaxUltimata
Squall is 17 in FFVIII, and as of Kingdom Hearts, he's 26. It's never explicitly said anywhere, I don't think, but he entered the Kingdom Hearts world roughly around the same time a major location fell to the Heartless, and that was nine years prior. It's also a great heresy, in retrospect, that he doesn't have his signature fur-collared jacket. He gets it in KHII, though.

Look, it's very simple - the Heartless have no bodies and the Nobodies are heartless What's confusing about this??
  • @EinDose
Kingdom Hearts is so often discussed in a very insular way, with no real connection to anything it pulls from (or at best, exclusively compared to Final Fantasy), that Ironicus digesting it specifically as a Disney fan is really refreshing and interesting.

So, fun fact: those cutscenes where Sora/Donald/Goofy keep missing eachother are 100% optional. The actual way to progress is that as soon as you leave the First District, the game waits until you've killed 5 heartless to turn on the cutscene trigger in the First District that lets you fight Leon.
  • @Xer042
In retrospect, having the Disney villains actually interact with each other makes KH1 really stand out compared to the rest of the series, because once we get past this game, Organization XIII takes the stage and they never really leave it. Just think about cool it was growing up watching stuff like Aladdin, Nightmare before Christmas, The Little Mermaid, etc. and then playing this for the first time, and now all the bad guys have formed a Legion of Doom against you, and they're reacting to Sora's progress.
  • Hearing Ironicus summarize how strange the plot has gotten in episode three of the first game is very funny.
  • @RealityPhobia
The additional cutscenes are pretty universally there to flesh out what Riku is doing during the game! It's a neat addition and lends a bit more weight to later events in the game
  • @philiard
Man, there is just such a different energy in the cutscenes in this game compared to literally every other game in the series. It's so much more goofy and cartoony, like they're actually allowing themselves to have a bit of fun with it before everything gets super serious. I love the whole series, but there's definitely a charm that's unique to KH1.
  • The whole Squall being renamed to Leon is one of my favorite things in the KH series. In one of the journal entries, it mentions that when his world fell to darkness, he decided he was no longer worthy of his own damn name so Squall LEONheart decided to start going by Leon... That might just be the most Squall explanation I've ever heard too.
  • @FiggityJones
This series is going to give me so much free serotonin.

One thing that I'm not a fan of in the Final Mix version of these games is how a bunch of the heartless got recolored. Most of them look a lot worse to me. Guard Amor, for instance, looked a lot better when it was purple instead of, like, a clown.
