A step-by-step tutorial and everything you need to know about making a CUTTING BOARD.

Cutting boards are typically a beginner woodworker's first project, BUT there are a few things you should know before gluing some pieces of wood together. In this video, I document my entire process of making a beautiful, edge grain, walnut cutting board from start to finish.

I tried to cover everything about making cutting boards - let me know if I missed anything below!

I've had the chance to use this table a couple of times now. It's fun to whip out in front of people:) I can see what people are talking about when they say the legs are delicate, but they're design to support a "mostly" vertical load, not be torqued from the side or pushed back into place. If you just let the table open or close on it's own and don't force anything, it works great youtube.com/post/UgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWx… Once it's set up, it's pretty solid. My only gripe would probably be related to the clamps provided. They're not the highest quality. They do the job, so no big deal, but they could be better. All in all, pretty cool gadget.
  • Beginners woodworking in the UK = a hammer, 2 odd screwdrivers, a crow bar and a roll of sticky tape in a falling down 6x6 shed
USA = a mitre saw, a table saw with a cross cut sled, a palm router, a CNC machine, a Jointer, a seperate planer all in a custom built workshop.

I don’t like when something is called a beginner project yet requires tools that most beginners would not have...
  • A cutting board is one thing I had never made, but after watching your video I was inspired to try it out. You did a great job of making it look fairly simple. I just finished my first board yesterday! Thanks for the great video!
  • @FriarCadfael
As I am a beginner, I think you did a great job explaining how it is really done. Thank you!

Hey man, I don’t leave a lot of YouTube comments, but I gotta tell you, this is a great video. Everyone has “cutting board” videos but this one is straight forward and actually makes me feel like I can do it myself. Subscribed!

I have a nice slab of walnut and I was going to alternate oak and walnut but I think I like the look of the all dark with alternating grain pattern instead. Thanks for the tips

Edge grain boards are definitely the way to go. I've made a total of 3 end grain boards for myself and the amount of sanding was painful. Plus I like the look of edge grain better. Awesome video. Keep up the great work.
  • I don't know why, but that music, when you started to apply finish, took me for a trip. I don't know whether it's because it's late and i'm tired, or whether it's the mead i've drank, but i liked it. Beatufil board, and a nicely cut video. Thank you.

I really appreciate this video. While I am not a beginner woodworker, I am a beginner cutting board maker, and I feel like it’s implied that you know how to use a miter saw or table saw properly. Which is great! If I wanted a beginner table saw video I would be watching that instead! I enjoyed seeing his workflow and the tools he uses give me great ideas. Thank you so much.

    Beautiful Job!!!

Just stumbled onto your videos for the first time, and really enjoyed this one, and one other, that I just watched back to back!

I'm 54 yrs. of age, and only wish I'd have learned a WHOLE LOT MORE about Woodworking, than I have thus far!

I've really, only touched on it briefly, (from Aug. 2013 - Nov. 2014), when as almost, complete novice, I was hired as a "Sander" at a Cabinet Shop, in Tacoma, WA.

This shop, as I came to realize later, (even as the novice that I was), did not produce "top of the line" work, due to substandard training practices, and also, their inability to keep the maintenance of their D.A. Sanders, etc!!

Anyway, as I've already inferred; I'm certain that I was never properly trained on how to use my D.A. to sand correctly, but I SURELY put forth my BEST EFFORT, to make the Cabinet Door Frames & other parts that I sanded, to look the best they could!!

All this leads to a question I have. I was wondering why in the one scene, you appeared to be standing only half the cutting board at a time, instead of moving your Sander all the back and forth across it??

As I've said, I know that I was never properly trained, so I'm certain there is a very good reason for that, which I am unaware; so I am rather anxious to hear of it!! 😊

    Thanks So Much!!

    Now in Abilene, TX. 🙂
  • I made one similar at trade school 30 years ago, out of Pine and black butt , end grained , the only issue was it cupped a bit , so I ran it through the planer , and re oiled it now it’s good to go for another 30 years ⁉️🙀👍👍👍🇦🇺

Great video, man. The step by steps are exactly the right amount of information without over indulging or skipping steps. Liked and subscribed. I've been wood burning and making a business out of that and am branching into "functional art". Sandwich boards, coat hangers, etc. Thanks for the video. I'll be watching more.

Thank You So Much! You just encouraged me to want to try the hubby's tools out. I've been asking for a butch block I think I can follow your directions, breaking them down into more precise DIY videos. So glad your video popped up on my Auto Play.

A great tutorial, thank you. I want to make a strip based Maidda (dough box) so this technique is perfect.
  • @demps6919
Jointer, planer, chop saw and table saw. Wow this really was for beginners with a full workshop.
  • @ndajenkinson
Good video with a great outcome. Although as a beginner, I don’t have any of those large machines.
  • I’m new to woodworking and am making my first cutting boards. One for my father and one for my son. I’ve watched a lot of videos Thank you for the very informative video. It answered all my questions. The board is beautiful btw.
