I love emoji; they're fun, they're creative, they make technology friendlier. But when you start working with emoji as a developer, you'll find out there's a lot more going on than you might think.

That was the longest setup for an emoji joke I ever saw. Phantastic execution, awesome!

I wish they'd take up the suggestion that you should be able to use the skin tone modifiers with the beer emoji to select from the range of lager to stout

Great stuff as always! Just one minor nit to pick. ISO is not calling themselves the Internation Standards Organization, but International Organization for Standardization. Ie ISO is not an acronym, but refers to the word 'iso' (from greek isos).

2:43 four of them are not new codepoints. Pheonix = bird + fire Lime = lemon + green square Brown mashroom = mashroom + brown square Breaking chain = chain + impact

Fascinating video - I did not appreciate the engineering behind emoji until now 👍

I've messed with creating an addon that displays flags in Chrome on Windows, and I seem to remember that Microsoft also enables the trans flag. Though I think you may need Windows 11 or install its Segoe UI Emoji font. That's all it is, BTW. It's just that they don't include flags in their font. And I've had a lot of trouble finding a font that does include them. My addon actually uses images.

Will there be more videos like this? I for one would be interested

Kinda weird that Windows doesn't even include the plain black and plain white flags at least.
  • awesome video, thanks. i always thought emoji was originally invented to help curve Poe's law. the fact that in txt only communication, all non verbal communication is lost. it comes from a great online debate long ago.

re Taiwan: that's why inside IBM that territory was called "Taiwan POC". POC didnt mean anything until the wrong people asked and then it because "province of china"

The only emojis needed , EVER is ascii
  • I think it was the whole border-between-india-and-pakistan-on-the-rotating-globe-in-the-time-zone-picker-in-the-Windows95-installer nonsense that made them decide to opt out of national flags.
