  • This is not just about soldering. It’s a fantastic tutorial on this and a host of other tips, techniques and things to consider. Thank you so much for sharing this!
  • A good point for new folks, is when fluxing the pipe, try to match the insertion depth of the fitting e.g 22mm pipe fitting maybe 1" insertion, so Flux an inch on the pipe, it helps identify whether you have full insertion (only a thin line will be on show once pipe is slid in) . This is good practice especially for awkward / multiple fittings assembled at one time before soldering. I apply solder with flame on opposing side, then remove the flame and almost cool the joint slightly with more solder, otherwise, especially on horizontal fittings, the solder sinks down the joint and you get almost a recess in the top of the joint. Taking away torch and adding solder while joint cools, it'll solidify very quick and stop that. Do not try to be neat soldering for the sake of it, to avoid having drips and adding not enough solder, so a joint pops, you'll kick yourself and never do it again.

This video is the best most comprehensive one I have seen.I have seen lots of videos though not really implemented what I learned and refereshing my unpracticed memory due to leaks. I thought it was really great, clear and concise. Thanks for your excellent work.

Professional video as always 👍🏻 Always enjoyed to watch your videos. Thank you
  • It would be useful to show capillary action by putting two flat pieces of glass together in dyed water. It is not 'attraction', but the interaction at a molecular level between the fluid (solder) and the solid surfaces provided the gap is small. Once trainees 'get' this they will not be mystified as to what is happening inside the joint when soldering uphill. This gives them the confidence not to overfill. Also emphasise that the wire wool is mechanical cleaning, the flux is chemical cleaning/oxidation prevention. Good vid.

You are amazing thanks for sharing this information .
  • If you’re new to pipework and soldering just get yourself a few lengths of 15/22mm copper pipe/fittings and just practice horizontal/vertical and overhead soldering And don’t forget safety glasses.
  • @alec1113
Brilliant education , have you tried tinning flux
  • downfall of soldering is I found that it bags my lungs up and that ever flux fumes sticks to your skin.. they've found soldering causes industrial asthma. I moved over to press fittings and using a novopress gun. feel much better after installing boilers. not soldered in 3 plus years now. Nice video Derek.

Quick question. You should not use everflux on gas. Or around the gas meter ect. It’s not a great idea causes a lot of leaks later on.

I havent soldered in decades but have a few jobs that need doing.l am going to get a bit of 10mm pipe from coil. yorkshire straight couplers connectors and do a bit of re cap practce before doing the job.need to buy a good solder mat as the present bathroom has a marble effect veneer ,theres a switch to a double rad same size.what l really want to know is with a medium gentle flame will l notice the speed variant much, l only done 15 and 22 previous.thanks for all your advise.
  • biggest tip is . copper and fitting must be spotless. If copper is gone dirty brown form sitting on top of the van for about six months. or it's just old copper, the best way to clean it is to apply some flux, heat the pipe till the flux starts to run, them immediately apply wire wool around the area to be cleaned, clean off immediately with a cloth. the copper will be spotless, guaranteed perfect joint.
  • Thank for your reply I am very sorry to disturb you as you very busy as you mentioned I checked the d.5 is 56 and d.71 is 75 on my heating system I am using smart Honeywell EVOPACK4 Evohome Base Pack & 8 HR92 Multi-Zone Heads with touch screen displays system

Copper & Zinc? Thought it consisted of Tin & a small amount of Silver, (& or Copper). I use 60 / 40 Lead / Tin, as that is all I have from my electronics days. I do have a roll of thick lead free and hope to learn how to use that now...
  • want to extend pipe out of wall for bathroom rad if I cut olive off wil a Yorkshire fitting be OK as pipe is slightly squashed
