This video focuses on quickly generating the raw content that will form the heart of a poem, guiding your young writers through a series of simple prompts to gather ideas for an ode to something they love.

According to Wikipedia “An ode is a type of lyrical stanza. It is an elaborately structured poem praising or glorifying an event or individual, describing nature intellectually as well as emotionally.” For the purposes of this video an ode is a poem about something you really really love

You will be able to gauge how long to leave for each prompt, but being clear in advance you will limit the time to about 90 seconds for each can be helpful to get your poets moving!

The video works well as a standalone activity for keystage 2 students (7-11yrs) but if you’re looking for a warm up activity to try before it, this is one of my favourites:    • Fun writing warm-up game for kids - "...

This video is 1 of 10 made in partnership with the National Literacy Trust. The videos are part of a 5 lesson learning sequence that will be available free on the NLT website in May.
