MR. BOJANGLES
(Jerry Jeff Walker)

I knew a man Bojangles and he'd danced for you
In worn out shoes
Silver hair, a ragged shirt and baggy pants
He did the old soft shoe

He jumped so high
Jumped so high
Then he'd lightly touched down

I met him in a cell in New Orleans I was
Down and out
He looked to me to be the eyes of age
As his spoke right out

We talked of life
Talked of life
He laughed and slapped his leg instead

He said his name Bojangles and he danced a lick
Across the cell
He grabbed his pants for a better stance
Then he jumped so high
And he clicked his heels

He let go a laugh
Let go a laugh
Shook back his clothes all around

Mr. Bojangles
Mr. Bojangles
Mr. Bojangles
Dance

He danced for those in minstrel shows and county fairs
Throughout the south
He spoke in tears of fifteen years
Of how his dog and him
Had travelled about

But his dog up and died
Up and died
After twenty years he still grieves

He said I dance now at every chance in honkytonks
For drinks and tips
But most the time I spend behind these county bars
Cause I drinks a bit

He shook his head and as he shook his head
I just had to ask him please - please

Mr. Bojangles
Mr. Bojangles
Mr. Bojangles
Dance
Dance
Please Dance

I have heard this song many many times but when he talks about his dog up and died l cry
  • I fell in love with this song the very first time I heard it which was many years ago. Red Skelton did a skit on his show where he was dressed up in clown make up 🤡 and danced to this song. I have heard it many many times since then. One of my favorite versions of this song is played by David Bromberg. I totally relate to the line "his dog up & died, and after 20 years he still grieves". I lost my dear sweet Jenny back in March 2011, over 13 years ago & I still grieve for her everyday. 🐶💔😥🐾🙏🏻🌈

Areal classic. Why hasn't this story ben told in movie form? Maybe I'll writ it. I have a very very strong feeling Mr. Bojangles is dancing in a heavenly place.
  • This is great, I love it being a Boomer I grew up with these songs heard from a radio on the tractor. I guess those were the days, thanks for sharing.

I remember Swaggies as we in Australia called Hobos, coming around when I was young, mum gave them some food and sent them on their way, not much as we didn't have much.
  • Listening again ! 😢❤ A favorite ! 😍 makes me shed a few tears every time I hear it...

Thanks for keeping Jerry Jeff Walker's Mr. Bojangles song alive. Excellent job, I loved the days when songs told a story. Jerry Jeff had quite a few, John Prine, Tom Waits, Dylan too.
