A point cloud is the raw 3D scan, which is then filtered and processed. A point cloud is created by a 3D-scanning technology. I will explain the software needed to work with point clouds and go over the different file formats. Learn more at: holocreators.com/blog/what-is-a-point-cloud/

A 3D scanner generates a point cloud. Each point in the point cloud is a measurement point that the 3D scanner has detected on the object’s surface. Each point has an XYZ value that determines its position in the coordinate system.

Software that can be used to look at point clouds:

I love how he explains in high detail what XYZ position means and then breezes over normals like they're nothing

This is the first video im learning about point cloud. Short and crispy explanations. Awesome. I got little bit about point clouds. Thanks my guru
  • @Reverse3D
Excellent video.. I worked for 12years using 3d systems, and until today, many colleagues don't know the difference between scan data..

Awesome 4.52 min Boot Camp Video! Very Helpful!!!
  • Thank you, this is very simple explanation about point cloud , great video and very informative
  • @ holocreators thank you so much for explain whati is point cloud

I am studying informatics and your video helped me a lot to understand the subject

Hi Swan, Great video. I would like to see a scaner in action and some theory about how it Works. May be you could do a video about that. Best regards

Great work! You seem to have done a lot of research on point clouds. Can you point me in the right direction to identify existing point cloud processing libs that might allow me to programmatically determine the dimensions of objects such as a picture frame hanging on a wall?
  • Great video! Is there any software in wich I can link 2D images to a specific point in the point cloud and visualize them? For example, link the three axis of a tomography image (axial, coronal and saggital) that are relative to each specific point in a point cloud, so I can have a 3D representation but also a multi image 2D representation. Tanks for your help!
  • Thanks for the explanation It was very helpful. I am working on building an android application to render using Point Cloud Library. And I am now stuck and confused about where to start with. Can you suggest the technology and resources that would help me in this process?

Great video, perfect that you show what can be done with freeware but it would be interesting if you show what you can do with your machines to?
  • Great video. Wanted to know how can I stream the real-time point cloud from Azure Kinect DK to say Unity software. What should I look for to get this done
