The potential energy is then transferred to kinetic when the release lever is pulled. Trebuchets propel a projectile through the use of a counterweight. The arm is pulled into position by means of a rope and the rope is released. This means the trebuchet uses the mass of the counterweight to determine the distance that the projectile will travel.
