The Airbus A350 vs A330neo - Which Plane Is Best?

Published 2022-06-30
The Airbus A330 has always been a solid workhorse of an aircraft. Neither as popular as the Airbus A320 series, nor as big and flashy the Airbus A350, this humble widebody finds itself right in the middle of the Airbus family lineup. The same can be said for the latest version, the A330neo. But should this aircraft type consider itself sub-par when compared to the A350? Or is it secretly a superior aircraft that will soon find its feet in the marketplace? Well, let’s see how the two compare in today’s video!

Always had a soft spot for the 330. It's overshadowed by the 350 but non the less is a great work horse.

While the 350 is always going to outsell the 330neo because of its better fuel burn, you have missed one important advantage of the 330 for some airlines. If they are an Airbus only shop for their narrowbodies (as many non-US airlines are) the 330neo has a common type rating with the A320 family. This gives a large gain in staffing flexibility and a large reduction in training costs, plus enough commonality to also reduce maintenance costs.
  • ~ As an Economy passengers; 8 abreast A330neo is much more preferable instead ~ As an AvGeek; would love to see Qantas A350-1000 Project Sunrise

The A350s stronger and lighter fuselage also helps with passenger comfort as it is able to be pressurised more which reduces dehydration and jetlag

The 330 Neo looks SO much better with those larger engines. Those really change the look of the plane. Makes it look pretty bad ass really. I like it!
  • Hope that the a330neos' sales pick up with airlines having to renew their ceo fleets in the near future. 28 years and counting for the a330 family. ❤️

I didn't know they were both that close in size. Makes you question why Airbus didn't bother with the A350-800 and open the door to all A350 fleets. With the A321XLR coming soon and being able to have up to 240 passengers in a narrowbody the A330 market is being eaten into by both ends. That's before you factor in how being beat them to the punch with the 787.

Happy to see Cebu Pacific's A330 which I've been on recently!

The A330-800 will still be around but as the MRTT variant in the Airbus Defence catalogue and is likely to sell more military than commercial aircraft. It would be interesting to hear how the leasing of the RAF MRTTs is going.

The a330neo will become more popular when older a330ceos need to be replaced

Comparison in operating costs and fuel burn is missing. I'm very sure, the A350 will have the edge on this by far.
  • The 3-3-3 seat configuration (9 seats across) on the A330 can get pretty cramped. AirAsiaX of Malaysia uses this configuration and it makes it for a cramped seating for someone larger than the average South-East Asian.

If I was to run an airline, I'd pretty much just choose A330-900s as my long body aircraft.
  • Singapore Airlines A350 economy seats are shocking for comfort and pitch. I recently flew both SQ 350 and JetStar 787 to Melbourne and the winner by far was JetStar/

Id like more on this subject bc it has many layers experts could weigh in on...

Does the 330neo have near-similar noise levels & cabin pressures as the 350? I've only been on (admittedly elderly) A330-200 & -300, and the A350 was a generational difference in terms of comfort. I've specifically chosen airfares due to the aircraft before, and a 350 would get my ticket over a 330 according to my (admittedly limited) experience. That sort of passenger sentiment would have to come into the airline's purchase-decision algorithm.
  • I see it as the A350 competing with the 777, and the A330 competing with the 787

A330neo is suitable for Low Cost Carrier like AirAsia X as its focus more on capacity and low maintenance cost. Also, they been using A330-300 for almost a decade now. So its pretty wise to pick 330neo as its new fleet.
