The Guild navigator did not appear until the 2nd book, and that scene from the Lynch movie never happened. It was all fabricated for the movie. The navigator never went to the Emperor and asked to have Paul killed.

If Villenueve adapts Dune Messiah, we will be getting plenty of Navigator screentime.

“I did not say this. I am not here.” Is my favorite line of all time.
  • This may be a best scene for DUNE, however it never happened in the book! The first time we see a Guild Steersman is in DUNE Messiah

I read Dune as a 14-year-old, and saw the '84 movie on opening night as a 16-year-old with my then girlfriend and I was pretty dumbfounded and angry at what I saw on screen that night. Until seeing The Phantom Menace on opening night some decades later, this was my most disappointing theater experience. I re-watched Dune '84 as a 40-something and found the movie oddly charming, if not aggressively corny and campy. I found amusement in the cartoonish portrayal of the Harkonnens. I compartmentalized my book experience from the movie experience and found peace there. I absolutely LOVE Dune: Part 1 and Dune: Part 2. I actually think Denis' changes from the book make for a more compelling story and raise the stakes. I don't miss seeing a visual of the Navigators in the first two movies, and feel pretty certain we'll be introduced to them in Dune Messiah.

I think Villenueve turned Dune into a simple revenge story by not explaining the importance of the spice and he who controls it. He left out the importance of its conection to space travel, the Choam, etc., all key actors in novels to come. It's true that navigators do not appear in the novels until Messiah, but he should have paved the road for the future. The feeling I got was that the spice might as well been sugar for all it did for humanity in these films. As a matter of fact I went to the movies with my nephews and they completely missunderstood the importance of the spice (needless to say, its importance has repercussions until Chapterhouse: Dune!)

I’m OK with the guild navigators not being shown in the first and second movie… But I’m not OK with the power of the guild being somewhat ignored.

I was 14 years old when the movie came out. I remember walking into the theater and seeing every chair in the movie theater having a letter size sheet of paper on it. As you sat down and looked at the paper, it had all of the words that you would hear in the movie and the definitions to go along with them. I assume it was to let the audience know a little bit about what they were about to experience. I wish I would’ve kept one of those pieces of paper.

I LOVE that they had representatives in these films. This director does not rely on excessive CGI and is known for that. He handled this perfectly.

That scene from the David Lynch film is so well done, so brilliant, I really thought it was in the book, even though I'd read the book before seeing the film. On reading the book again, I was really surprised to see that it isn't anywhere in the book. But it's still my favourite scene in the David Lynch version.

It was pointed out that the folding of space is due to the Holtzman generators. The navigators, using their spice powers, navigate by seeing multiple paths and choosing the safe path.
  • @dougwhiddon8227
Navigators do not fold space in the books. They use presience to find a clear path for the ships to travel at hyper light speed. Without them a speck of dust would eliminate one of the ships.

That navigator scene is the one I've played most often of any Dune movie. I often watch only that scene of Dune as part of an evening multiple media viewings. I'm glad someone thought of it.
  • @Tommii38
The Guild Navigators didn’t fold space, Holtzman engines did.

There is so much rich source material in these novels, the Dune saga could be movie material for the next 25 years. I first read Dune thru to Dune Chapterhouse in the mid 70's. Those books could support a movie franchise for years to come. I read Brian Herberts and Kevin Anderson's versions of Dune about 12 years ago IMHO these were also great. I would love to see a film made about the first Guild Navigator, Norma Cenva, and her attempts to transform herself into a Navigator.
  • Good stuff! I miss definitely the navigators from 1984 Dune and the sonic weapon, triggered by the word Muad'dib. And the hairstyle of the Bene Gesserit back then. This was mindblowing.

I loved the sighting of the navigator in the 84 movie at the space port. I was a kid but it was unforgettable.
  • @Ozzymandias493
The Guild navigators do not appear until the sequel books so the remake got it right
  • @michaelgnunn1
Fact is, we don't see a stage 3 navigator until dune messiah. It's not missing from the films, they just followed the book better.
