This camera has been on my shortlist for a while now - an amazing camera that still stands out a decade later. The Sony QX1 is a 20mp APS-C sensor interchangeable lens camera from 2014 with no screen.

Putting the 600mm f/4 on this thing would be absolutely hilarious.

I bought the QX1 right after release and never knew it had a flash until seconds ago.

"It still works today" Wow! "Sony Imaging Edge Mobile" Nooooooooooooooooo!

I was interested when it came out, but then I realized how much I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate using my phone as a camera. When family or friends asks me to take a photo on a phone I act like my arms were recently cut off.

This camera would be amazing to attach to a telescope for Astrophotography
  • The fact that this is more expensive than a used a6000 (and uses the same battery) is hilarious and amazing
  • I bought a MagSafe mount and attached it on the connector. They fit perfectly

I've never seen chest cam footage where the bars are out of focus 😅
  • Sony’s history is full of flops. That’s why they’re so successful.

I had the QX1 for a year. Image quality was fine (for the time) but my main gripe was connection issue. 2.4GHz wifi just wasn't good enough, and it was in constant network congestion everywhere I go. I hate that camera manufacturers are always YEARS behind network standards--5ghz became the norm in laptops and phones back in 2012-2013, yet the first camera to have 5ghz was I believe the GH5 in 2017, the first 5GHz Sony camera was the A7R4 / A7S3 in 2019-2020.

Sony was always at the forefront of neat miniaturization. I had that wrist remote. And it was dope. Worked like a charm for its action camera pal.

i got this camera for $338 used on ebay in 2021. It is a very unique and capable camera. something you would get as collectable over everyday use.
  • The only thing , that I really really wish this thing had was a microphone input so I can get great audio quality

I use its little brother QX10 as my point and shoot solution for the last however long it's been out. As long as you have autofocus (always with the QX10, but QX1 depends on the lens) and don't zoom, it can be used completely "blind". It only takes a bit of spatial awareness to point it exactly where you want it to, and you get used to keeping it straight (pretty easy to adjust because it's cylindrical). And you can't review the photos right off the bat, so it gives a kind of analog feeling of film cameras, with none of the hassle. I love getting fun angles with that thing. Zoom is handy too but it's hard to freehand with narrow field of view. It's also really easy to toss on a cheap smartphone gimbal compared to any other camera.

Funny enough this thing has mechanical shutter, but latest Lumix S9 don't, and I still can't wrap my head around the fact why Lumix released that camera in that state, considering horrible rolling shutter.

You've made a very nice video. I'm also a QX fan, started with the 100 in 2014 and wished for a changeable lens version which I bought in 2017. the best thing about this system is the inconspicuous way to take pictures. When you are looking at your smartphone, everybody around you knows that you are preoccupied with something and leaves you alone, not suspecting that you are maybe taking pictures of them. This is the ultimate street photography camera. A couple of things you missed out, touch to focus, can use A mount lenses with the LA EA4 adapter (from a cost viewpoint). I also have a 300mm f2.8 Minolta which I have used with it. I've also side loaded the Play Memories app to my Epson Moverio 35 (bought to fly my Mavic 2 Pro) so I see what the camera sees in the glasses and can control the camera ( like with the smartphone ) with the handset. Keep up the good work.

Well James, you've just made me buy a QX10. For a split second the QX1 did cross my mind because I am a Sony APS-C shooter owning already a selection of lenses and using camera apps daily. Then, I looked at those lenses and confirmed your observation of it all being too cumbersome. Instead, I've picked up the QX10 on eBay for AUD170. Not too much money for me to risk, I guess, if it is in perfect condition as per seller's description. Comes from Japan - patience required. Not expecting miracles but if pictures from it are not worse than from my Pixel 4a, I'll be happy.

love the b-roll and footage, love your voice and speaking skills, just perfectly well done for a talking video and its not easy for me to say that considering how many similar review/talking videos ive seen. honestly dont change anything

So glad I came across this video. I’ve had one of these since they came out and it’s had almost no use because I found it difficult to manage. I’m definitely going to look for one of those little “viewfinder/controllers” and then take it out for a spin.
