Who else is here because of the Emma soundtrack?
I love these harmonies so much! My daughter says the solo sounds like an old Sam Gamgee :)
  • The 60s folk revival gave us this beautiful reminder of pre-industrial England - we are long overdue another folk revival.
  • RIP Norma Waterson 1939-2022. May you always ramble in the new mown hay xx
  • Watched "Emma" last night! Was so thrilled to hear Maddy Prior again and the Watersons. Was a folksinger in London myself in the mid 60s. This was MY music! And Steeleye Span my favorite group.
  • @rosea2350
This reminds me of the hymns we sing in church down here in the Deep South of America.
  • Agreed! We need another folk revival, especially with choruses! I was brought here by my love for the Revels.
  • This is probably my all time favorite. It brings me to tears every time. I remember when I was strung out and sick I would lie on the floor and listen to this when I couldn't feel anything except pain. And I'd be carried away. I'm much, much better now and more in tune with the song. And what a wonderful song.
  • I like to rise when the sun, she rises
    Early in the morning
And I like to hear them small birds singing
    Merrily upon their laylum
And hurrah for the life of a country boy
And to ramble in the new-mown hay

In spring we sow, at the harvest mow
And that is how the seasons, round they go
But of all the times, if choose I may
'Twould be rambling through the new-mown hay

For I like to rise when the sun, she rises
    Early in the morning
And I like to hear them small birds singing
    Merrily upon their laylum
And hurrah for the life of a country boy
And to ramble in the new-mown hay

In winter, when the sky is gray
We hedge and we ditch our times away
But in the summer, when the sun shines gay
We go rambling through the new-mown hay

For I like to rise when the sun, she rises
    Early in the morning
And I like to hear them small birds singing
    Merrily upon their laylum
And hurrah for the life of a country boy
And to ramble in the new-mown hay
  • This music will never die, as long people listen to it

I like to rise when the sun she rises.....early in the morning!
  • I saw this sung in a play called The Brook. For the most part, it was pretty great! Mary Fay is a national treasure.
  • OMG they're doing the play again in Dartmouth! Mary Fay is still acting in it. Can't wait.
  • @kidn
This is my favourite song to sing! (very badly and loudly... and going from one harmony part to another)
  • @gmckennon
One of my Watersons favorites!  Keep up your incredible tradition!
  • This is about to get a huge resurgence of recognition imo, as it has been featured super prominently in the remake of EMMA, it's the very first SONG played in the background over a bucolic transitional scene..

It is one of my very fave songs to sing at sessions, cos I do indeed like to rise when the Sun she rises, early in the morning, I like to hear them small birds singing merrily upon the laylum myself, every day, when I am well...
  • @Bekki369
