Description:
A cutscene from the Birthplace located in the Abyss. You must have the Kingsoul to open the way to the Birthplace. Then, have to go through some platforming until you reach the top, which will reveal some lore on "The Knight"(Player) and "The Hollow Knight"(Boss). This will replace the Kingsoul with the Voidheart upon completion, which gives you access to an extra ending, and shades will be harmless to you.

Note that the Hollow Knight was never truly hollow. The fact that they even stopped to look back at the knight means that they had a mind to think.

What's interesting about this cutscene is that it contains an anachronism. The Knight didn't have the Mantis Claw, the Mothwing Cloak or the Monarch's Wings at that point in time. I like to interpret this as the Knight revisiting a especially traumatic memory, not an actual representation of how it happened. The real climb out must have been much more difficult.

The transformation of Kingsoul always made me thing or feel as if the Knight's memories of everything coming together including the past must've made it sad to the point that they completely shut down to completely hollow themselves out. Clenching to the charm as you see this man who's loved by everyone and how the world of Hallownest, just...let you fall to your assumed death. That'd throw me over the edge and empty out whatever emotions I had left to focus. Edit 3 years later: No way! 2k?! And a pin?! Thank you!

No cost too great - His kingdom, his legacy, his power, possibly his life. No mind to think - the Hollow Knight's mind and the thoughts within were completely manipulated by the Radiance. No will to break - the Hollow Knight stabs itself of its own volition to possibly gain power or to assist you. No voice to cry suffering - the Hollow Knight cries in pain constantly throughout the fight. You will seal the blinding light that plagues our dreams - Failed and has become a pawn to the Radiance. The Hollow Knight literally failed at everything the King said it would do. I love this game and its small details so damn much

What really makes me feel sad is the line "No voice to cry suffering."..... It's like the king actively removed his children's ability to speak so that he wouldn't have to hear them cry out in pain as he murdered most of them and allowed one of them to live so that it could live in eternal torment as a prison because he felt like that one was the one he managed to fully destroy...

Just want to point out something: neither the Pure Vessel nor the Knight are truly hollow. As many pointed out with the former, they wouldn’t of looked back otherwise. With the latter it’s a bunch of little things. Sitting with Quirrel at the lake to start with. It doesn’t even matter if you chose not to, the Knight considered it. They considered joining a bug in companionship over fulfilled duty, instead of dismissing him as no longer relevant.

What I love is that in this scene the Knight isn't supposed to have any upgrade not even his sword. That's why he's holding on that edge in the edge since without monarch wings or spade cloak that jump is impossible.
