Magical Realist fiction is a genre most associated with novels, but it's permeated the world so deeply at this point that games can't help but take influence, even unknowingly. I think we can find a unique perspective on the genre, one that shows a lot of beauty, by examining the way it manifests in video games.

  • I'm always looking for more people talking about KRZ- it feels like everyone has an observation or concept around it that I would have never considered! I've never thought about the fact you can only truly see the sky once, and now that that's in focus for me I really think its a major factor in what makes that scene so visceral. Regarding Disco Elysium, my favorite moment of magical realism is the meeting with the insulindian phasmid- both it and 5 Dogwood Drive feel like a push towards faith in our ability to interface with the seemingly impossible. for how grim both of those games can be, i think they want you to come away with hope that one day these cycles of despair and ennui can be broken, even if were not around to see it. Really great vid, excited to see what other stuff you've done :)
  • “He really had been through death, but he had returned because he could not bear the solitude.”
  • Such a high quality video, yet only 2k subs... Hope the algorithm will treat your channel well!!! Glad I came across it.
  • @RedVodyanoi
100 Years of Solitude and Disco Elysium in one video, what a bargain! I really love Magic realist media like 100 Years of Solitude, it gives me these vibes I can't explain but really like experiencing
  • Somehow, in a world, where every possible combination of every thing exists already, where everything to be seen has already been seen, your videos are unique. Thank you, I am in an awe.
  • @adamyohan
Incredibly high quality and intriguing. It's like if Jacob Geller made something more concise, using a "more is less" approach with higher quality editing. At least that's my impression. Pump for the algorithm.
  • Genuinely a great video for such a small channel! If this doesn't blow up the algorithm isn't doing its job
  • - Honey, wake up, Ephemera Essays posted another video! - Gladly. Top notch video as always. It's like they scratch an itch I never even knew existed. Keep 'em up because this is a niche many people can't get enough of!
  • Your videos are such a joy to watch. You put the "video" back in video essays. You have such a masterful control over visual storytelling and all it involves (cuts, pacing, composition, music, even typeface) that it puts you strides ahead others in the field.

Beautiful. Also despite liking magical realism myself, I'd never thought to apply it to things like Disco Elysium and certainly not Control.
  • @NgaMarsters
I do like how Disco Elysium actually rewards lore-lovers such as myself. And I feel sorry for those who don't have the patience for it. I also love how it's something literally everyone should know. So no one thought to actually tell despite you losing your memory. I don't know what it is but it could be the voice acting that actually made me love exposition dumps or in that game or maybe that it actually comes into play later and I don't think it's fairly that people criticize the game for something that's completely optional (I only found out on my third play through what the pale is).

I've been a writer for a bit now and Magic Realism has eluded me despite it being such a beloved genre to me. But now, thanks to this incredible video, I think I've nailed what I want to do with it. Thank you! Seeing what you've been able to do with your channel so far is incredible and I cannot wait to see what you do with it.
  • This is a beautiful essay. I'm gonna go play all of these games now.
  • Great video! Nice comment on Disco Elysium, it's mt favorite game of all the ones you listed, and surely there's a gold mine of philosophical themes one can extract from this game. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this.
  • @jamesdelisio
Yes! This is incredible! I'm a massive lover of Magical Realism - I did a video talking about the genre's influence in the films of Hayao Miyazaki a while back, and I had to stop myself from talking about KRZ. I'm glad to see someone else doing it! Great video, loved it :D
  • @ArkonArchive
We were here when You had only 6 videos and 2.5k subs. A phenomenal achievement but I can't wait to see what You become!
  • @Aranock
Thank you for sharing yourself, this was beautiful 💜
  • Always stick around till the very end, to vibe to the ending theme 🖤 superbly well done as always
  • @firstername
