The empire had seen more than 3000 years of stability prior to the famine, stability mankind had never before known. When the God emperor died there was a political collapse of macroscopic proportion. The effect went well beyond the political realm into the most essential economic aspects of human life. Leto’s empire had been a collection of entangled economies bound together by a central political power. Leto had been that power. Many of these interlocking economies contain entire planetary systems and even whole sectors containing several systems and others were limited to single worlds. Each of these economies depended on faster than light space travel in order to maintain themselves. But space travel required spice. During the rule of the God-Emperor Leto II, the planet Arrakis had been terraformed. It was no longer referred to as Dune. The changing of the world's environment had lead to the death of the sandworms, which meant that spice production ceased as well.

It's crazy how many pictures of the god emperor exist and how there all different. I like the sand trout armor for his youth and the head sticking out of a pigmy worm with tiny little raptor arms for most of his life span.
  • This channel evolved in the best way possible since it was “Ideas of Ice and Fire”

The big point of Dune is to be aware. Aware of your own feelings, and the feelings of others. Awareness brings you to a state of learning. In your learning state your mind becomes open. The open mind leads to empathy. Empathy leads to love. Love is the most dangerous weapon in the universe. Dune, amirite?

Heretics and Chapterhouse are the two Dune books I have read the fewest times (two or three times each) so they are least present in my memory. Nice to be reminded of some important points from that book.

The quality of this video was mind-blowing! You made the concepts of the Famine Times and the natural social and economic fallout sound like a professional documentary. Excellent work!
  • amazing, thank you all, it's been an incredible journey, just keeps getting better. Much love.

I was always fascinated by the stories of what would of happened between God Emperor and Heretics, thankyou for the investigation!

This scattering is such a rich area barely touched .... Brilliant video... Leto saw it all.....
  • Amazing how this entire dune world came from one person’s mind

It's been too long since I read these books. My memory is that spice-less space travel was rediscovered, not invented. Someone realized that if humanity came from Earth and spice from Arrakis, then humanity had to have had faster than light technology.

Thanks Quinn. Excellent as always. I watch this and think the Dune universe is so massive it is a shame there are only 6 books in the original series.

I’m so glad I was wildly financially irresponsible and recently bought a copy the Dune Encyclopedia (COVID Shopping). I’m really looking forward to reading it now!!
  • @Quinn gotta say, your comprehension, interpretation, and explanation of these much loved books is beyond impressive. You exercise a level of storytelling that is very worthwhile. Thanks, and best regards.
  • Very cool! I think cyborgs was definitely one part of it. If you think about the way the universe was in Heretics & Chapter house, it pretty much flip-flopped everything in the time of the old empire. The way everything was in book one got pretty much turned upside down through the last two books. I think that all culminated with the sisterhood being merged with the honored Matres . My overall Take from the ending was like that of Abraham Lincoln ending the Civil War. Instead of two factions killing each other off until one is the ultimate victor; I think what Frank Herbert was going with here is the idea that the merging of the two factions would be the best solution. Perhaps the idea of cyborg (evil robotics blended with humans) was a kind of side line parallel to reflect how everything Else in the dune universe would become.

  • Can I just say that I love your intro music. I threw my phone in my car and this video started playing on its own. Even though I couldn't see the screen I knew it was one of your videos!
