Goosebumps: Slappy's Evolution (1993-2023)

Published 2023-10-25
Goosebumps is an American horror comedy television series developed by Rob Letterman and Nicholas Stoller for Disney+ and Hulu. It is based on the book series of the same name by R. L. Stine. The series abandons the adaptation format of the 1995 original TV series to focus on a serialized style of storytelling instead, while still featuring many of the existing Goosebumps monsters and items.

In 2020, a series based on the Goosebumps books was announced to be in development by Sony Pictures alongside Original Film and Scholastic Entertainment, all of whom previously developed the films Goosebumps (2015) and Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween (2018), that were both from Sony Pictures Animation, based on the books. Letterman, the first film's director, was hired by 2022 to write the series alongside Stoller. Letterman also directed the pilot episode. This was the first Sony Pictures Television series to be distributed by Disney since Hotel Transylvania: The Series that premiered on Disney Channel in 2017.

Goosebumps was released on October 13, 2023, on Disney+ and Hulu simultaneously as a part of the "Hallowstream" and "Huluween" streaming blocks, respectively.

It received mostly positive reviews from critics, who praised the story, visuals, cinematography, writing, acting and casting with a particular amount of praise going towards some of the monster designs and the darker, more serious tone, though there was some criticism for the pacing and some of the monster designs.

Slappy the Dummy is the mascot of the Goosebumps franchise and the main antagonist of the Night of the Living Dummy saga. He is a living ventriloquist dummy that comes to life when the words "Karru Marri Odonna Loma Molonu Karrano" are read aloud; which translates to "You and I are one now," and they can be found on a sheet of paper in Slappy's dress jacket pocket. After coming to life, Slappy will try to make the person who brought him back to life serve him as a slave.
Since his debut in 1993 at the end of Night of the Living Dummy, Slappy has become the most popular villain and the mascot of the Goosebumps franchise, appearing in more books and media than any other Goosebumps character. He received his own book series in 2017, with the title of Goosebumps SlappyWorld. He has also appeared in three episodes of the Goosebumps TV series and appeared as the main antagonist in the Goosebumps film, as well as its sequel Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween.

wow Slappy in 2023 he changed alot and he meaner then ever
  • Jack Black is the most accurate to the books. A raspy voice with a high pitched laugh. Chris Geere has more range going from normal British accent to more raspy tone when upset and commanding something from someone. The 90s show sounds like evil Bugs Bunny.
  • People are going to hate me for this, but i like 2023 Slappy, because he's more menacing than the others

Best Slappy voice for me is Jack Black because his voice is raspy like the Slappy in the Goosebumps books. Second for me is Chris Geere. The reason why I have Jack Black over Chris Geere was because Chris Geere's voice is a bit too British for Slappy but his voice is intimidating. If he had an American voice, then is he the definitive voice for Slappy. Third is Chris Dodd where he sounds like Bugs Bunny but evil. Fourth is Mick Wingert because he is trying to imitate Jack Black's voice.
